Milky Quartz

Milky quartz scratches glass and a steel blade will not mark it. It sits in the cheap tray and it will outlast most of what is around it.

The shop calls it snow quartz when it wants a better price. Same rock, different label.

Aries, you have never been able to tell the difference between resting and quitting.

Somebody taught you that stopping was how you lost ground. Maybe a coach, maybe a parent, maybe a year when nobody would have caught you if you slipped.

So you go until something makes you stop. Then you file the stopping as a failure. Meanwhile this rock has done nothing for a very long time and it is still harder than the knife.

Sit down for one hour tonight and do not earn it first.

This is the cheapest thing in the case. Plain quartz, clouded white, worth almost nothing by the kilo.

The cloud is not a feature. It is millions of tiny bubbles of water and gas trapped while it grew, and the flaw is the whole look.

Taurus, you have spent your life quietly worried that you are the plain one.

Somebody made a comparison in front of you once. A sister, a friend, a stranger at a party. It was one sentence and you can still hear it.

Since then you pick the safe outfit and the safe seat and the safe version of what you were going to say. Nobody has seen you try too hard, because trying too hard was the thing that got noticed.

It scratches glass. Nothing else in that case can touch it.

Somebody renamed this snow quartz so it would sell. Nothing was added and nothing was done to the rock. Only the label moved.

Underneath it is ordinary quartz that grew out of hot water in a crack, clouded by bubbles caught inside it.

Gemini, you rename things too, and you are very quick about it.

Tired becomes busy. Hurt becomes an anecdote. A bad year becomes a phase you were going through.

You learned that the well-packaged version of a feeling gets you kindness. The raw one gets you managed. So you package everything now, out of habit, even when there is nobody in the room.

What is it actually called?

Hot water full of silica moved through cracks in rock and grew quartz there, slowly. Countless tiny bubbles of water and gas got caught inside while it was forming.

That is all the white is. Not purity and not snow. Trapped water that never got out.

Cancer, you are holding things from years ago that nobody knows are still in there.

You did not get to be upset at the time. There was a household to keep running, or a parent who needed you steady, or a younger one who could not be told.

So you took the feeling and put it somewhere and carried on. You were good at it, and everyone said how well you were coping. Nobody comes back later to check.

It is still in there. That is not a defect.

Pick it up and drag a corner across a window pane. It leaves a line. Then try to scratch it with a knife and nothing happens.

That is quartz, and it sits in the cheapest tray in the shop under a name the seller had to improve. Nobody looks at it twice.

Leo, you cannot work out whether you want to be looked at or left alone.

You get both wrong. When the room is on you, you are working. When it is not, you are checking why.

That started somewhere you had to earn attention rather than expect it. Being noticed became proof that you were still all right. Being ignored became information about your worth, and neither one was ever true.

You are fine unwatched.

This survives salt, water, sunlight and years in a bag with keys. The only real damage is dirt in the rough surfaces, and a soft brush deals with that.

It is also the cheap one. The shop has to call it snow quartz to shift it at all.

Virgo, you are much harder to break than you give yourself credit for.

You keep a running audit of your own faults and you would call that honesty. It is not honesty. It is a habit you picked up from somebody who audited you first.

You could name six things you did wrong this week and none you did well. The list has never once made you better at anything. It only makes you quieter.

Write down one thing you did well and leave it on the counter.

Snow quartz is not a species. It is milky quartz with a nicer name attached so it can be priced higher.

The rock itself is common everywhere. It is cloudy because of water and gas that got caught inside it while it was growing.

Libra, you have a nicer name for almost everything you feel.

Fine covers a very wide range for you. So does no worries, and honestly it is not a problem. You have said all three this week.

You learned that the true answer costs somebody something, and you decided you would rather pay it yourself. You have been paying it yourself for years. Nobody has any idea there is a bill.

The rock is the same rock either way.

The only thing anybody has done to this stone is rename it. Snow quartz sells, milky quartz does not, and the rock never changed.

What it is, is quartz grown in a crack out of hot water, clouded by bubbles that got stuck inside it.

Scorpio, you notice every rename, including the ones people run on their own behaviour.

You can hear when an apology is a negotiation. You have been able to since somebody trained you to, and that training was not gentle.

It keeps you safe and it keeps you alone, because the same radar that catches a liar catches the ordinary clumsiness of people who mean well. You lose good ones that way. You know you do.

That is bubbles, water and gas caught while it grew. The cloud is a flaw, and the flaw is the entire look.

Capricorn, you have been treating your own limits as a design fault.

You keep a list of things you should be able to do and cannot do at the moment. Sleep less. Carry the extra thing without saying anything about it.

Somebody in your history made rest look like a moral failure. You took the lesson whole, and now a slow week reads to you as evidence. You are a person, not a machine that is underperforming.

Go to bed early tonight and do not call it recovery.

It comes through water, salt, sun and years without altering. Quartz is dull that way, and dull is why it is still here.

Somewhere young, needing things went badly for you, so you became the one who observes instead. It is a good position. It also means that when a friend asks how you are, you answer with an analysis of your circumstances.

There is nothing rare about this stone. It is common everywhere and it is the cheapest thing on the shelf.

The white came from water and gas trapped inside it while it grew. What looks soft is hard enough to scratch glass, and a knife will not mark it.

Pisces, you have decided that being soft means being weak.

Somebody used the words too sensitive on you at an age when you still believed adults. You have been apologising for the way you take things ever since.

So you say sorry for crying and sorry for caring and sorry for noticing what other people missed. None of that is fragility. It is the reason your friends ring you at midnight and not somebody else.
