Howlite
Howlite
Someone dyed it blue and sold it as turquoise. That is not gossip. It is the trade's default move. Howlite formed in old salt flats, where boron-rich water left chalky white lumps with grey veins running through them. Those veins are the trap. Dye pools dark inside them. Real turquoise never webs like that. Scratch a hidden spot with a pin and howlite cuts like chalk. Turquoise will not. Undyed, it is the quiet-the-mind stone, and you have needed one. You are not restless at night. You are on watch. Somebody made you responsible for a whole house before you were old enough to be. You will not be fooled twice now.
People carry it for calm, sleep and communication. Tradition attaches it to the element air, the crown, third-eye chakra, Moon. It is most often given to Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius. It measures 3.5 on the Mohs scale.

Common·Uncommon·Rare·Arcane
It is howlite, not turquoise. Howlite is the most dyed stone in the entire trade, because it is porous and grey-veined. It gets sold as turquoise, as lapis and as sugilite. It also gets sold as charoite, red coral and black onyx. Dyed howlite is honest when labelled and fraud when not. Assume any vivid, uniformly coloured stone with fine dark webbing is dyed howlite until proven otherwise.
This one does not go in water. It dissolves.
What it is confused with
Turquoise, magnesite, dyed howlite, marble, satin spar, angelite
Opaque chalky white, crossed by an irregular spidery web of fine grey to black veins. The veins branch and thread across the surface with no directional pattern. They are thin, sharp and dark against a porcelain-white matte body that never takes a high gloss. Raw material forms lumpy nodules like cauliflower heads. It is very soft, and a steel pin or even a fingernail will mark some pieces. When dyed, the colour saturates the porous white body and concentrates hard in the veins, giving a far darker vein than natural turquoise ever shows.

How to tell
Scratch it somewhere hidden with a knife or a pin. Howlite cuts like chalk, at 3.5 on the hardness scale. Turquoise, at 5 to 6, does not. Next, rub a hidden area with a cotton bud dampened with acetone. Dye lifts onto the bud. Natural colour does not. On blue howlite, scratch inside the drill hole and you will find white underneath. Howlite does not fizz in acid, which separates it from magnesite.
The most dyed stone in the entire trade. Its porous body and grey veining make it the default fake for turquoise, lapis and sugilite, and for charoite, red coral and black onyx. The dye soaks into the white body and pools dark in the veins. Dyed howlite is honest when it is labelled and fraud when it is not. Assume any vivid, uniformly coloured stone with fine dark webbing is dyed howlite until proven otherwise. If you already own one, you own a real mineral that was coloured, and that is worth knowing rather than hiding.

What it means
The moon is in Sagittarius today, so this is the Sagittarius read.
It also meant nobody could reach you the one time somebody was right.
Look at the drill hole on a blue bead. If there is white inside it, the blue is dye, and the bead is howlite wearing turquoise's name.
Undyed, it is chalk white with grey veins, out of an old salt flat. Soft enough that a pin marks it.
Sagittarius, you will be whatever a room needs and you have lost track of what you actually are.
Adults spent your childhood listing what you could not do and getting it wrong nearly every time. So you stopped listening to careful people altogether.
It has taken you places most people never get to. It also meant nobody could reach you the one time somebody was right. You sorted that one out alone.
Check the drill hole anyway.

Howlite for every sign
AriesNow the slow stretch of anything feels like a mistake you can still get out of.
Somebody dyed it blue and sold it as turquoise. That is not a rumour. It is the trade's most common move, and howlite is the stone it gets done to.
Underneath the colour it is chalk white with grey veins, grown in a dried-up salty basin out of boron-rich water.
Aries, you have been whoever the situation needed at high speed, and you cannot remember what you actually think.
You were praised for how fast you moved before anybody praised you for staying put. Quick became the thing people said about you, so quick is what you kept delivering.
Now the slow stretch of anything feels like a mistake you can still get out of. You have left rooms that were about to get good.
Scratch a hidden spot with a pin. Chalk means howlite.
TaurusYou went home and quietly changed the rules for everyone.
Howlite is porous, so water pulls the dye back out of it and sunlight fades what is left. Salt abrades the surface. A dry cloth is the only safe clean.
The dye is the whole story. This is the white stone the trade dyes blue and sells as turquoise, and it does the same trick for lapis and black onyx.
Taurus, you stopped trusting a bargain, and you did not decide that on your own.
Somebody sold you a nice version of something once and you found out later. You did not confront anybody. You went home and quietly changed the rules for everyone.
Now good things have to serve a waiting period, and a couple of them left the queue.
Dyed and labelled is honest. Dyed and unlabelled is a lie.
GeminiSomebody asked how you actually are and got a great answer instead of the true one.
Salty basins dried out and boron-rich water left chalky white lumps behind in the gypsum and clay. The grey veins running through them came with the lumps.
Those veins are the trap. Dye pools dark inside them, which is why dyed howlite sold as turquoise webs in a way real turquoise never does.
Gemini, you can be almost anybody convincingly and you stopped keeping a record of which one is you.
Being quick and interesting held a room for you when you were young, and being plain lost it. So you started colouring things in without noticing.
Somebody asked how you actually are and got a great answer instead of the true one. The true one was shorter and greyer.
Grey veins are the part that proves it is real.
CancerYou are on watch, and you have been since you were about twelve.
Find a spot that does not show and drag a pin across it. Howlite cuts like chalk, because it is soft, and turquoise will not cut at all.
That test exists because this is the stone dyed blue and sold as turquoise more than any other. A scratched drill hole gives it away too, white inside.
Cancer, you let people believe the tougher story about you rather than correct them at the table.
Somebody made you responsible for a whole house before you were old enough for it, and everybody around you found that very convenient.
You are not restless at night. You are on watch, and you have been since you were about twelve.
Undyed, people keep this one by the bed. Dry cloth only.
LeoNobody asked you, and you had a good answer ready that was not true.
Take the colour away and it is a soft white stone with grey veins, soft enough to mark with a pin. That is all howlite ever was.
The trade dyes it blue and calls it turquoise, and dyes it purple and calls it sugilite. Labelled, that is honest. Unlabelled, it is a lie.
Leo, you are frightened that under the paint you are plain, and you have never let anyone check.
Being bright and easy earned you a seat somewhere early, and you have been paying that fee ever since, long after anybody was collecting it.
The night ends and you know how everybody in it is doing. Nobody asked you, and you had a good answer ready that was not true.
White underneath. Always was.
VirgoYou were the accurate one before you had any say in it.
Rub a hidden patch with a cotton bud and a little acetone. If colour lifts onto the cotton it was dyed, which is what happened to most of the blue howlite sold as turquoise.
The stone itself is honest. Chalk white, grey veined, grown in a basin that dried out.
Virgo, you have spent years being whatever the room needed and now you cannot find the white.
You were the accurate one before you had any say in it. Accurate children get handed the jobs nobody else wants to check.
So you catch every small error at speed, and the one enormous thing you cannot fix sits in the corner getting quietly older.
Test the stone. Then leave the corner alone for one night.
LibraNow you can talk for an hour without once saying what you would prefer.
It formed slowly in basins that dried out, where boron-rich water left white nodules among the gypsum and clay. Nothing about it was ever loud.
Then the trade found its favourite blank. Dyed blue it is sold as turquoise, which also undercuts the Navajo, Zuni and Puebloan makers who work the real thing.
Libra, you learned early that nothing you needed was worth being loud about.
Somebody in your childhood made a whole evening depend on one sentence, and you were small, and you learned to say the sentence that kept things flat.
Now you can talk for an hour without once saying what you would prefer. You notice it afterwards and let it go.
Prefer something out loud today.
ScorpioYou have spent years being liked in place of being known.
Leave a dyed piece in water and colour bleeds out of it. Leave it on a sunny sill and what is left fades. It is porous, so it cannot hold a borrowed look for long.
The borrowed look is usually turquoise. Howlite is the white stone the trade dyes blue and sells under that name.
Scorpio, somebody put a colour on you that was not yours and it took best in your cracks.
You told the truth in a room that did not want it, and you were young enough that it went in deep. After that you sent out a version with the colour turned down.
People find her easy. You have spent years being liked in place of being known.
The white underneath was never the problem.
SagittariusIt also meant nobody could reach you the one time somebody was right.
Look at the drill hole on a blue bead. If there is white inside it, the blue is dye, and the bead is howlite wearing turquoise's name.
Undyed, it is chalk white with grey veins, out of an old salt flat. Soft enough that a pin marks it.

CapricornYou were handed the responsible role before you were old enough to refuse it.
Underneath the paint job it is a soft white nodule out of a dried salt basin. Chalk white, grey veins, and a pin will scratch it.
It is the stone the trade dyes blue and sells as turquoise. Most of the cheap turquoise in the world is this, coloured.
Capricorn, you have spent years passing as the more valuable version of yourself.
You were handed the responsible role before you were old enough to refuse it. Everybody else in that house relaxed the moment you took it.
Rest gets filed as waste. So does the long stretch you spent holding people up, because there is nothing at the end of it to show anybody.
White, plain and real still beats blue and borrowed.
AquariusYou can spot a fake in a market from three metres.
Dyers use howlite for everything. Blue for turquoise, darker blue for lapis, purple for sugilite and charoite, red for coral, black for onyx.
It works because howlite is porous and grey veined, so the dye pools in the veins. Real turquoise never webs like that.
Aquarius, you can be whatever a group needs and the trouble is how easily you take the colour.
You were made to feel odd somewhere early, and you handled it by stepping outside the group and studying it instead. It was a brilliant solution at eleven.
You can spot a fake in a market from three metres. You have no idea what you needed from anybody this week.
Come inside the group. Nobody is testing you.
PiscesYou have been borrowing other people's colours ever since.
A salty basin dried out and left white lumps of howlite in the clay, veined grey, grown out of boron-rich water. It sat there being nothing much for a very long time.
Then the trade found it. This is the white stone dyed blue and sold as turquoise all over the world.
Pisces, the colour people know you by went on later, and it settled deepest in your cracks.
Everything anybody near you feels arrives in you whole, and it always has, and as a child you took that for the normal arrangement.
Nobody said otherwise, so you never built a way to close. You have been borrowing other people's colours ever since.

What tradition says
In crystal lore, undyed howlite is linked with calming an overactive mind and with sleep. Its bigger cultural role, undeniably, is as the base material for the trade's most common substitutions.
Care
- Do not put this one in water. It dissolves or spalls. Dust it dry.
- Keep it out of direct sun. The colour goes and does not come back.
- Salt scratches it. Do not bury it in salt.
- Water is the first thing to keep away. It leaches dye out of treated pieces and stains untreated ones. Sunlight fades the dye. Salt abrades the soft surface. Dry cloth only.
