Moissanite
Silicon carbide, in the gem trade almost always laboratory grown
In 1893 a French chemist was sorting through fragments of an iron meteorite that had punched a crater into Arizona, and he found tiny crystals he took for diamonds. They were not. They were silicon carbide, a compound that barely survives in the earth's crust because there is far too much oxygen here. Where it forms naturally is in the last outward breath of dying stars, and in the deep mantle where oxygen is scarce.
So the honest sentence about moissanite is that nature makes almost none of it. Everything you can actually buy was grown in a furnace, and the first cut stones went on sale in 1998. That is not the shameful part. That is simply what the gem is.
The turn is in the naming. Moissanite is harder than nearly anything else you can wear, and it splits white light into colour at more than twice the rate a diamond does, which is why a big one flashes like headlights on a wet road. Sold as itself, at its own price, under its own name, it is a good gem and nobody has been cheated.
Sold with the word diamond bolted on, moissanite diamond, Sona diamond, it becomes a lie with a hyphen in it. A diamond is carbon. This is silicon and carbon. And the cheap testers people wave over stones read heat rather than composition, so they will call this a diamond all day long and the seller knows it.
You know the shape of that. Someone set you beside a thing you were never trying to be, then graded you on how close you came. You did not ask to be the alternative to anything. It became the frame anyway, and after a while you started using it yourself, describing what you are by naming what you are not.
It came out of a star and landed in a crater. It does not need to be a diamond.
People carry it for clarity, courage and transformation. Tradition attaches it to the element fire, the crown chakra, Uranus. It is most often given to Aquarius, Gemini, Sagittarius. It measures 9.25 to 9.5 on the Mohs scale.

Common·Uncommon·Rare·Arcane
Moissanite is the correct mineral name and there is nothing dishonest about it. The lie is the compound. Any listing that says moissanite diamond, Sona diamond or silicon carbide diamond is selling you a contradiction, because a diamond is carbon and this is silicon carbide. There is no such material as a moissanite diamond.
What it is confused with
Diamond, white sapphire, zircon, cubic zirconia
Face up it throws far more rainbow flash than a diamond of the same size, and a large one in bright light can look almost like a disco ball. Tilt it off square under a loupe and the facet junctions on the far side read as two lines instead of one. Older and cheaper material often carries a faint grey, green or yellow cast that shows worst under warm indoor light and vanishes in daylight, which is why people swear their stone changes colour. It is lighter than diamond for its size, which is why the trade prices it by millimetre rather than by carat.
Commonly faked · check before you buy
How to tell
Take a ten times loupe, tilt the stone off square so you are not staring straight down the middle, and look at the facet junctions on the far side. Moissanite bends light in two directions at once, so each of those lines reads as two lines slightly offset from each other. Diamond bends light one way and shows a single clean line every time. Do not trust a cheap diamond tester here. The common ones measure heat, and silicon carbide carries heat about as well as diamond does, so a thermal tester will call moissanite a diamond. A dual tester that also reads electrical conductivity separates them, because most moissanite conducts and colourless diamond does not.
Almost every moissanite in existence was grown, and honest sellers put that on the tag. It is not a treatment and it is not a fake, it is what the gem is. The trouble starts at the edges of the language. Moissanite gets sold outright as diamond, and it gets sold under compound names that do not exist as materials. Cheaper stones sold as moissanite are sometimes cubic zirconia instead, which is softer, noticeably heavier in the hand and duller after a year of wear. Coloured moissanite is coloured during growth rather than dyed or irradiated afterwards, so the colour will not wash out or fade. What you are checking on this stone is not what was done to it. It is what it was called.

How it forms
In nature it forms only where carbon is plentiful and oxygen is scarce, chiefly in the outflows of dying stars and in the deep mantle, and it reaches the surface as microscopic grains in meteorites and as inclusions in kimberlite.
Where it comes from
Canyon Diablo meteorite in Arizona, the Green River Formation in Wyoming, kimberlites of Yakutia in Russia. All gem material is grown in laboratories, chiefly in the United States and China.
What it means
The moon is in Sagittarius today, so this is the Sagittarius read.
Distance did not damage the grain.
Presolar grains. That is the real term for the oldest of this material, dust that formed around a star which died before our sun was lit, and drifted for billions of years before a meteorite carried some of it into Arizona.
Sagittarius, distance is where you are comfortable because closeness once came with a bill attached. That is the cause. Not wanderlust, not a philosophy about freedom, an old arrangement in which staying meant paying and leaving was simply cheaper.
Some things travel an unreasonable distance and arrive intact. The grain was not damaged by the crossing, and neither were you.
That is today's sky, not your chart. Add your birth details and this stone gets read against your own.

Moissanite for every sign
AriesIt does not need three thousand years of history. It needs the structure.
Moissanite is harder than every gem you can name except diamond, and it throws more than twice the fire. It went on sale in 1998. In geological terms that was last Tuesday.
Aries, you were not built to wait your turn, and that is arithmetic rather than arrogance. Somewhere early you worked out that the people who got there first got asked things, and the ones who queued got explained to. So you stopped queueing. It has cost you a couple of friendships and saved you several years.
A gem does not need three thousand years of history behind it to cut glass. It needs the structure.
TaurusWhat you keep is the thing, not what it cost to say out loud.
Two rings on one tray, four thousand and four hundred. Same size, same white, and the cheap one throws more colour across the room. The only difference the wearer can actually feel is the price she paid.
Taurus, you have quietly wondered whether the expensive version of a life is better or only more expensive. That question started somewhere. Somebody showed you early that worth got announced by cost, and you have been rechecking that sum ever since, usually in private and never out loud.
What you keep is the thing itself, not what it cost to say out loud.
GeminiThe mineral has an actual name. So do you.
There is no such material as a moissanite diamond. Diamond is carbon. This is silicon and carbon, a different compound with a different hardness and a different fire. The compound name exists so that a listing can borrow a word it has not earned.
Gemini, you have been described in borrowed words most of your life. Someone found you hard to file, reached for the nearest label and used that, and you let it stand because correcting people is exhausting and it so rarely lands the way you meant it.
The mineral has an actual name. So do you. Say it plainly and let the wrong one fall off.
CancerIt survived because of the conditions, not because it was tough.
The first grains of this ever identified came out of a crater in Arizona, blown off a dying star long before the sun was lit and carried here inside a lump of iron. It survived because there was no oxygen where it formed. Here it would have burned away.
Cancer, you know the feeling of being somewhere the air does not suit you. That is not weakness and it is not imagination. You came out of a household with a particular chemistry and you learned its rules so thoroughly that ordinary rooms still feel a little wrong.
Survival was never about being tough. It was about the conditions being right, and you have some say in those now.
LeoBeing genuine and being what someone expected are two different tests.
You have probably heard someone call it fake. Ask that person what it is made of and watch the answer arrive slowly. It is a real mineral with a real name and a real chemistry, and it is not a diamond, and none of those three facts cancels out either of the others.
Leo, the reason a wrong description lands so hard on you is that praise was conditional in the house you grew up in. Being seen accurately was rare enough to feel like good weather. So when somebody gets you wrong you do not shrug it off, you feel it in your chest for a week.
Being genuine and being what someone expected are two different tests. You keep passing the first one.
VirgoThe first test was not lying. It answered a smaller question.
The handheld testers jewellers wave over stones mostly measure heat. Silicon carbide moves heat about as well as diamond does, so those testers call this a diamond and always have. It takes a second, electrical reading to separate them.
Virgo, one measurement was never going to be enough for you, and you were right about that long before you had the words for it. Somebody's confident wrong answer cost you something once, early, and after that you began checking everything twice as a matter of routine.
The first test was not lying. It was answering a smaller question than the one being asked.
LibraThe stone is fine. It is the sentence that decides.
A stone sold honestly, at its own price, under its own name, has cheated nobody. The same stone with the word diamond attached is fraud. Nothing about the material changed between those two sentences. Only the sentence changed.
Libra, you have spent a long time keeping everyone comfortable, and the cost is that you let a wrong sentence stand now and then rather than break the mood. That habit has a source. Someone taught you that a corrected person is a wounded person, and you have been shielding people from small true things ever since.
The stone is fine either way. It is the sentence that decides whether it is a lie.
ScorpioYou check because nobody checked for you.
Some stones sold as moissanite are cubic zirconia. Softer, heavier in the hand, dull after a year of wear. The person selling it may not even know, because they were told the same thing by the person who sold it to them.
Scorpio, you check because nobody checked for you. There was a moment where someone should have been looking out for you and was not, and rather than stay exposed you became the one who verifies. From outside it reads as distrust. From inside it is only a job that nobody else picked up.
The weight in your hand tells you before the paperwork does. Keep listening to that.

CapricornIt has no lineage at all and it is doing perfectly well.
Nineteen ninety eight. That is when the first cut moissanite went on sale, under patent, from a single company. No ancient tradition, no inherited name, nothing handed down. It stands on what it is and on nothing else.
Capricorn, you were handed a ledger of expectations before you could read one, and you have been servicing it ever since. That is where the tiredness comes from. Not the work itself. The sense that the work is repayment on something you never agreed to borrow.
This stone has no lineage at all and it is doing perfectly well. Credit earned outright is lighter to carry.
AquariusGrown is not lesser. It is the same lattice, made on purpose.
You are looking at something that exists in quantity only because people built a furnace to make it. The natural supply is dust in meteorites. Everything wearable was grown deliberately, by hand, on purpose, inside the last thirty years.
Aquarius, being called artificial has followed you around. Someone decided that a self you chose on purpose counted for less than one you were handed at birth, and you have been carrying that ranking around without ever having agreed to it.
Grown is not lesser. It is the same lattice, made on purpose, by somebody who knew exactly what they were after.
PiscesYou learned to dim on the way in, and the habit is older than the reason.
Hold a big one under a bright light and it breaks white light into colour so hard it looks like showing off. That is dispersion, more than twice a diamond's. It is not pretending to be anything at all. It is doing the only thing its structure allows it to do.
Pisces, someone told you once that you were too much, and you believed them because they said it kindly. Kind delivery is how the worst lines get through. So you learned to dim on the way into a room, and the habit is old enough now that you do it before you notice you are doing it.
What would it actually cost the room if you walked in at full brightness?

What tradition says
There is no old lore attached to this one, and any page that hands you some has invented it. The mineral was named in 1905 for Henri Moissan, who found it in meteorite fragments, and it was not sold as a cut gem until 1998. What has grown up around it since is star-origin talk, because the first grains ever identified came out of a crater, and modern crystal writers tend to keep it for clear thinking and for beginnings rather than for anything inherited.
Care
- Water is fine. Dry it afterwards.
- Warm water, a drop of washing up liquid and a soft brush. It is hard enough to shrug off ordinary wear and it does not fade in sun, does not mind salt and is not harmed by water. The one real risk is the setting rather than the stone, so keep it off harsh cleaners that attack silver or plating. Store it apart from softer stones, because at this hardness it will scratch almost everything it is thrown in a pouch with.
Common questions
What does moissanite mean?
Moissanite is carried for clarity, courage and transformation. In 1893 a French chemist was sorting through fragments of an iron meteorite that had punched a crater into Arizona, and he found tiny crystals he took for diamonds. Tradition links it to the crown chakra.
Is moissanite real or fake?
Moissanite is the correct mineral name and there is nothing dishonest about it. The lie is the compound. Take a ten times loupe, tilt the stone off square so you are not staring straight down the middle, and look at the facet junctions on the far side. Moissanite bends light in two directions at once, so each of those lines reads as two lines slightly offset from each other. Almost every moissanite in existence was grown, and honest sellers put that on the tag.
Can moissanite go in water?
A short rinse is fine for moissanite, then dry it.
