Fake Crystals: How to Spot Them (4 Tests)

To spot a fake crystal, use four tests: scratch it (real quartz is Mohs 7 and scratches glass; most fakes and dyed stones are soft), backlight it (glass shows an even orange glow; dye pools in cracks), look at it under a 10x loupe (round bubbles mean glass), and swab a hidden spot with acetone (dye lifts, natural color stays). No single test is proof, but together they expose most of what the trade passes off. The stone doing the least to hide itself is usually the honest one.
Fakes fall into three groups: manufactured glass (opalite, goldstone, cherry quartz), dyed or treated stone sold as something rarer (howlite as turquoise, heated amethyst as citrine), and substitutions (labradorite as moonstone). What are the fastest ways to tell if a crystal is real?
Five tests catch most fakes with tools you already own:
- Hardness / glass scratch. Real quartz (amethyst, citrine, rose, smoky) is Mohs 7 and scratches glass; it is not scratched by a steel knife. Most soft fakes, dyed howlite (3.5), calcite (3), are cut easily by a knife.
- Backlight test. Opalite and other glass glow warm orange when lit from behind. Dyed stones show color concentrated in cracks and drill holes rather than evenly through the body.
- 10x loupe. Round gas bubbles and swirl marks mean molten glass. Real crystals show growth zoning, inclusions, or mineral grain, never round bubbles.
- Acetone swab. Rub a hidden area with an acetone-dampened cotton bud. Dye lifts onto the swab; natural color does not.
- Streak test. Rub the stone on unglazed tile. Malachite streaks green, hematite red, lapis blue, jet brown, a fake in a different material streaks wrong or not at all.
Is my citrine real or heat-treated amethyst?
Most "citrine" sold is heat-treated amethyst, and the tell is conclusive. Amethyst roasted at roughly 400-550 °C turns orange-brown, leaving a chalky white base and a sharp break into deep orange at the tips. Natural citrine's paler color fades gently or continues evenly through the base of the crystal. Both are quartz (Mohs 7), so hardness won't separate them, only the color distribution will. Heat treatment is permanent and, aside from that color boundary, undetectable by any consumer test. Natural citrine's soft yellow can also weaken under long UV exposure; the roasted orange does not.
Is my turquoise real or dyed howlite?
The great majority of commercial turquoise is treated, and a large share of cheap "turquoise" is dyed howlite or magnesite, not turquoise at all. Turquoise is Mohs 5-6 and resists a steel knife; dyed howlite and magnesite are 3.5 and cut like chalk, with color pooled in the veins and a white core visible under any scratch. Two confirmations: acetone on a cotton bud lifts blue dye from howlite but leaves turquoise unchanged, and a drill hole on dyed stone shows a white interior. To separate howlite from magnesite, use acid, magnesite is a carbonate and fizzes; howlite does not react.
Is my moonstone real or opalite?
Opalite is manufactured glass with no natural counterpart, despite being sold as "moonstone," "opal," or "sea opal." Real moonstone is a feldspar (Mohs 6-6.5) with a soft, blue-white, directional sheen and roughly 90° cleavage steps. Opalite betrays itself by backlight: a warm orange glow when lit from behind, a cold blue glow in reflection, and round bubbles under a loupe. A related trap is "rainbow moonstone," which is mineralogically white labradorite, a real stone, honestly beautiful, but not moonstone. Its blue flash appears in discrete patches with black needle inclusions; true moonstone's sheen is continuous and billowy across the whole stone.
Is aura quartz natural or coated?
Aura quartz is real quartz with a manufactured metallic coating a few atoms thick, bonded in a vacuum chamber with vaporized titanium, gold, or niobium, a process commercial since the 1980s. The stone is genuine; the iridescent color is not natural. Find any chipped, sawn, or broken area, a coated stone shows ordinary colorless quartz underneath. True internal iridescence (labradorite, rainbow obsidian) sits inside the stone and shifts as you tilt through one plane, rather than coating every surface uniformly. Aura quartz is honest when disclosed; the fault is only in sellers who imply the color is natural.

These stones are routinely dyed, heated, coated, reconstituted, or manufactured outright. "Treated" isn't automatically fraud, most treatments are legitimate when disclosed, but you deserve to know.

FAQ
Does a fake crystal always have bubbles?
Round bubbles are conclusive proof of glass, real crystals never have them. But their absence doesn't prove authenticity: dyed and reconstituted stones are real mineral matter with no bubbles. Use bubbles to catch glass, then use hardness, acetone, and streak for the rest.
Is dyed or treated stone the same as fake?
Not always. Most treatments, oiling emerald, heating aquamarine, waxing jade, are standard, disclosed, and legitimate. It becomes fraud when it isn't disclosed, or when one material (howlite) is sold as another (turquoise). The honest test is whether the seller tells you.
Can I test a crystal without damaging it?
Yes. Backlighting, the 10x loupe, streak on tile, and an acetone swab on a hidden spot are all non-destructive. Save scratch tests for an inconspicuous edge or drill hole, and never acid-test a stone anywhere but a hidden, already-damaged spot.
