Amber
Fossilised tree resin (mineraloid)
Pick it up. Four seconds in your palm and it is warm. Glass and plastic never manage that. It is not a stone. It is tree resin that ran down a wounded trunk and then hardened underground for millions of years. Copal is the young version. Plastic is the lie. Real amber floats in very salty water and both of those sink. You are still holding something people told you to put down months ago. You went quiet because their patience ran out first. That is not you being stuck. That is loyalty to something that mattered. People kept amber close for grief, though the teething necklace is a modern sales idea and a real choking risk. Keep perfume and hairspray off it. Both cloud the surface for good.
People carry it for protection, grief and abundance. Tradition attaches it to the element fire, the solar-plexus, sacral chakra, Sun. It is most often given to Leo, Aquarius, Gemini. It measures 2-2.5 on the Mohs scale.

Ambroid and pressed amber are real amber, but not one solid piece. Small scraps are heated under pressure until they fuse into a block. You can spot it by the flow lines running between the old fragments. Sun spangles, the flat disc-shaped cracks, also come from heat treatment rather than from nature. Heat is used to clear cloudy material and to darken colour. Green and blue amber is usually dyed.
This one does not go in water. It dissolves.
What it is confused with
Copal, plastic imitation, glass, resin with fake insect, citrine heat treated
Amber runs from honey to deep cognac and lets light through. The shine is resinous and slightly greasy, never glassy. The first clue is weight. It is so light it feels like plastic rather than stone, and it goes warm in your hand straight away. Inside you may see flat disc-shaped cracks called sun spangles, usually left by heat treatment. Also swirling flow lines, and gas bubbles that are stretched and irregular rather than round. Sometimes an insect or a scrap of plant. Rub it briskly on a sleeve and static will let it pick up small bits of paper.

How to tell
Start with the salt float. Stir about 8 teaspoons of salt into 250 ml of water and drop the piece in. Amber floats. Most plastics and glass sink. Next put it under a UV torch. Amber glows pale blue-white and most plastics stay dull. If you are still unsure, touch a hot needle to a hidden spot. Amber smells of pine resin. Plastic smells of burnt plastic. Copal, which is young resin, is softer and tackier, dissolves quickly in acetone, and its trapped insects look far too fresh.
Most amber on sale has been heated under pressure. That clears cloudy material and leaves the flat disc-shaped cracks known as sun spangles. Heat is also used to darken the colour. Small scraps get pressed into bigger blocks and sold as ambroid or pressed amber. Look for flow lines running between the old fragments. Dyed green and blue amber is common. All of this is permanent, all of it is normal trade practice, and treated amber is worth less than untreated. None of it makes your piece fake.

What it means
The moon is in Sagittarius today, so this is the Sagittarius read.
You are still running from one specific life you refused to inherit.
Cloudy amber gets baked under pressure until it clears. The heat leaves little disc-shaped flashes inside, and those get sold as sun spangles, as though the sun had done it.
The other trick is dye. Most green and blue amber on a market stall was honey coloured until somebody decided the world wanted green.
Sagittarius, you were wounded once and you have been catching everything that comes near you ever since.
It got you out of somewhere. There was a person in your early life who was frightened of everything, and you watched what that fear did to their years.
So now a locked door reads as an insult and slowing down feels like becoming them. You are not reckless. You are still running from one specific life you refused to inherit.
Nobody has ever put it to you that plainly.

Amber for every sign
AriesNow if a thing takes years you assume you picked wrong.
Pick it up and count to four. Amber goes warm in your hand in that time, because it is not a stone at all. It is resin that ran down a wounded tree.
Most of what gets sold as amber is copal, which is the same thing far too young, or it is plastic. Real amber floats in very salty water. Both of those sink.
Aries, you ran from a wound at full speed and things got stuck to you on the way.
The wound on that tree closed slowly. Nothing about that stretch looked like progress, and nobody stood there saying well done.
You were rewarded early for being first. Now if a thing takes years you assume you picked wrong. You go looking for the next one before the first has had time to set.
Nothing here hardened in a hurry. Not this. Not you.
TaurusWhat it cost you was the assumption that people mean what they say.
This was liquid once. It ran down the side of an injured tree, catching dust and legs and pine needles as it went, then sat buried for tens of millions of years.
Half of what sits in the shop case has been baked under pressure to clear it up. Those pretty disc-shaped flashes inside are heat damage, sold as a feature.
Taurus, you learned to distrust anything shiny that came too cheap.
Somebody sold you a story once and you paid for it in full. The money was the smallest part. What it cost you was the assumption that people mean what they say.
So now you go slowly and touch everything before you believe it, and people call you stubborn. You are not stubborn. You are checking.
Warm it in your hand. That part cannot be faked.
GeminiSomebody asks how you are actually doing and you hear yourself start performing.
Amber has lasted tens of millions of years underground. It came through burial, pressure and time without breaking.
A spray of perfume ends it. Hairspray and nail varnish remover cloud the surface for good, and it is soft enough to scratch on a zip.
Gemini, you keep everything that ever touched you and you have never once looked at the collection.
You survive the big things. Bad years, hard rooms, people leaving. You are quick and you are funny and you get through.
It is one ordinary question that undoes you. Somebody asks how you are actually doing and you hear yourself start performing. You learned that when the truth was too much for the adults in the room.
The truth is not too much now.
CancerBut there is nobody assigned to the ordinary Wednesday version of you.
Small scraps of amber do not sell, so they get pressed together under heat into one block. That is called ambroid, and you can see the flow lines where the fragments met.
Green and blue amber is mostly dyed. The teething necklace it gets sold in is a modern sales idea with a real choking risk, not old lore.
Cancer, you were pressed into one piece out of a lot of small broken years, and the lines still show.
You have been the safe one since you were small. Somebody in that house needed steadying, and you worked out how to do it before you could name it.
Now you get told you are wonderful in a crisis, and you are. But there is nobody assigned to the ordinary Wednesday version of you. You have stopped expecting one.
Who steadies you?
LeoYou noticed early that a bright room got you kept.
Amber is not a mineral. It is the sap of a damaged tree that hardened for tens of millions of years and kept whatever was stuck in it at the time.
Which means the insect everybody crowds around is often set in plastic. A hot needle on a hidden spot smells of pine on the real thing, and of a melting bin on the other.
Leo, you are still carrying something somebody said to you at fifteen, perfectly preserved.
You are the one who makes the evening work. You noticed early that a bright room got you kept. You have been paying that rent ever since.
So you arrive already switched on. You go home and cannot say what you wanted out of any of it, because wanting was never the part anybody clapped for.
The warmth in this one is real. It only needed a hand to show up in.
VirgoYou were raised somewhere that a mistake got noticed and a mess got mentioned.
Hold it under a UV lamp in a dark room. Real amber glows a pale blue-white. Most plastic just sits there.
Two seconds and you know. Copal fails the same test, and copal is amber that is only a few thousand years old instead of millions.
Virgo, you kept every small thing anybody ever said to you, and you can still quote them.
The cupboard gets reorganised at midnight. The email gets rewritten four times. The conversation you owe one person has been waiting since last autumn.
You were raised somewhere that a mistake got noticed and a mess got mentioned. So you keep the surface flawless and let the rest sit there.
The surface was never the thing anybody was going to leave over.
LibraYou keep it in because you can already picture the face it lands on.
The tree was damaged. Resin came out to seal the break, ran down the bark, and kept running long after the wound was covered.
Everything that landed on it stayed. Millions of years later a shop calls those inclusions and charges more for them, which is a strange way to price an accident.
Libra, you kept being kind to somebody long after the thing that needed fixing had closed over.
You have known the honest answer for a while now. You keep it in because you can already picture the face it lands on.
Somewhere back there you were handed the job of keeping a household calm. You took it, and nobody ever formally released you. So you still run every sentence past a room that is not even in the building.
Say the short one. To one person. Tonight.
ScorpioSo you learned to hand out a smaller version and watch how it was received.
Amber came through tens of millions of years of burial. Heat, pressure and the weight of everything above it, and it held.
Sunlight is what finishes it. A bright shelf darkens it and cracks the surface into a fine web, and that crazing never goes back.
Scorpio, you have kept one sentence about yourself perfectly preserved for years.
They meant it kindly. That is exactly why it went in so deep. You were told you were intense, or too much, or hard work, by someone whose opinion you actually wanted.
So you learned to hand out a smaller version and watch how it was received. The people who could take the whole thing were there the whole time. You stopped offering.
Somebody could take it. You would have to find out.

CapricornYou have never once tested whether anyone would have stayed anyway.
This is sap. Not rock and not crystal, just the stuff a damaged tree pushed out to cover a break in itself.
It sits at 2 on the hardness scale, which means a fingernail is nearly enough to mark it. The oldest thing in your house is also the softest.
Capricorn, the thing you did to cover a wound became the part people admire, and you have never corrected them.
If a day produced nothing you can point at, it goes in the wasted pile. The evening you spent on the phone with someone falling apart goes in there too.
You worked out young that you would be kept for what you provided. So you have provided, without a break, for years. You have never once tested whether anyone would have stayed anyway.
The resin was doing its job the whole time it was invisible.
AquariusYou chose that so young it stopped feeling like a choice.
Drop it into very salty water and watch what happens. Real amber floats. Plastic and glass go straight to the bottom.
Eight teaspoons of salt in a cup of water is the whole test. Rinse it and dry it properly afterwards, because sitting in salt water does it no good at all.
Aquarius, you have a test for everybody who gets close and you never tell them they are taking it.
You can tell a friend exactly what her mother is doing to her. You can name the thing going on in a group chat before anyone else has noticed it.
Then you get home and cannot say what you needed all evening. Standing slightly outside the room was safer than being in it. You chose that so young it stopped feeling like a choice.
What would you have asked for?
PiscesYou are still carrying a conversation from four years ago.
Resin ran out of a wound and took everything with it. A wing, a seed, a fleck of bark, all of it held exactly where it landed.
It never let go of any of it. Tens of millions of years later a stranger pays extra for the things it could not put down.
Pisces, you keep the whole of a thing long after everyone else has agreed it is over.
You are still carrying a conversation from four years ago. Somebody told you to move on, and you went quiet rather than explain why you could not.
That is not you being stuck. People have kept amber close through grief for a very long time, and what you are doing has a better name than stuck.
You were not slow to let go. You were being faithful.

What tradition says
In crystal lore, amber is kept for protecting children, for warmth, and for drawing out whatever has gone stagnant. One modern claim needs saying plainly. Amber teething necklaces are a commercial invention, the claim behind them is not supported, and a necklace on a baby is a real strangulation and choking risk.
Care
- Do not put this one in water. It dissolves or spalls. Dust it dry.
- Keep it out of direct sun. The colour goes and does not come back.
- Salt scratches it. Do not bury it in salt.
- Keep it away from anything solvent based. Perfume, hairspray, alcohol and nail polish remover will dissolve or cloud the surface. It is also very soft, about 2 to 2.5, so almost anything will scratch it. Sunlight and age darken it and craze the surface with fine cracks. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth and nothing else. Store it away from heat.
Common questions
What does amber mean?
Amber is carried for protection, grief and abundance. Pick it up. Tradition links it to the solar-plexus, sacral chakra.
Is amber real or fake?
Ambroid and pressed amber are real amber, but not one solid piece. Small scraps are heated under pressure until they fuse into a block. Start with the salt float. Stir about 8 teaspoons of salt into 250 ml of water and drop the piece in. Most amber on sale has been heated under pressure.
Can amber go in water?
No. Amber dissolves or spalls in water. Dust it dry instead of soaking it, and keep it out of salt.
