Never put these in water: selenite, satin spar, and desert rose (gypsum, Mohs 2, they dissolve); calcite, aragonite, malachite, azurite, rhodochrosite, and other carbonates (acids and prolonged water dull or dissolve them); pyrite, hematite, and magnetite (they rust); and galena, malachite, azurite, and chrysocolla (they leach toxic metals). Water "cleansing" ruins more crystals than any drop ever will. When in doubt, dry-brush only.

The "cleanse your crystals under running water" advice is everywhere, and for a large share of popular stones it is destructive advice. Here is exactly which stones fail in water and why, traced to hardness, chemistry, and solubility, not folklore.

Which crystals dissolve in water?

The gypsum family dissolves outright. Selenite, satin spar, and desert rose are all hydrated calcium sulfate (CaSO₄·2H₂O) at Mohs 2, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail. Water pits and clouds the surface, and prolonged contact breaks the crystal down completely. Satin spar is the single most water-damaged stone in the trade. Angelite (anhydrite, CaSO₄) is worse in a specific way: it absorbs water and chemically converts to gypsum, swelling and crumbling.

Which crystals are damaged by water even if they don't fully dissolve?

Carbonates. Calcite, optical calcite, aragonite, rhodochrosite, magnesite, and septarian are carbonate minerals (built on CO₃). Acids dissolve them and prolonged water dulls the polish. Optical calcite loses its clarity to slightly acidic tap water alone. A drop of vinegar fizzing on a stone is the universal carbonate test, and a warning to keep it dry.

Porous, dyed, and stabilised stones. Turquoise is porous: water, sweat, oils, and perfume discolour it permanently, turning blue material green (this is why antique turquoise is green). Howlite and magnesite leach their dye in water. Lapis lazuli's calcite content dissolves and its wax and dye leach out. Lepidolite (Mohs 2.5-3) delaminates as water lifts its mica layers.

Which crystals rust or react chemically in water?

Iron and sulfide minerals corrode. Pyrite (FeS₂) suffers "pyrite disease", humid air and water oxidise the sulfide, producing sulfuric acid, white crusts, and eventual crumbling. Hematite (Fe₂O₃) and magnetite (Fe₃O₄) are iron oxides that rust, staining orange and pitting. None of these should ever be soaked, and all should be kept out of humid bathrooms. Store pyrite with a silica gel packet if you live somewhere damp.

Which crystals are toxic in water?

This is the category that matters for your health, not just your stone. Putting these in water is how "crystal elixirs" become genuinely hazardous:

  • Galena, lead sulfide (PbS). Water leaches lead. Never soak it; washing it just moves lead into your sink.
  • Malachite and azurite, copper carbonates. Copper salts are toxic if ingested, and both are soft and water-reactive.
  • Chrysocolla, copper silicate. Porous; water leaches copper.
  • Bumblebee jasper, arsenic-bearing and partly soluble. Never immerse.

Do not make elixirs or "gem water" from any of these. If you want an infused-water ritual, use the indirect method, the stone in a separate sealed vessel that never touches the water. This is mineralogy, not medical advice: the safe move is simply to keep toxic and soluble stones out of anything you drink.

How do I cleanse crystals without water?

Every stone above can be cleansed by dry methods: a soft dry brush or cloth, an hour on a windowsill (for the sun-safe, non-fading stones only), sound, smoke, or burial in dry salt-free earth. Note that salt is its own hazard, selenite, satin spar, aura quartz, pyrite, hematite, and many others are salt-sensitive too, so "bury it in salt" is not a safe universal either. When you don't know a stone's chemistry, dry-brush is always safe.

FAQ

Can I put amethyst and quartz in water?

Yes. Quartz-family stones, amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, smoky quartz, clear quartz, are Mohs 7 and water-safe. Rose quartz and amethyst fade in sunlight, but water is fine.

Why does my selenite look chalky now?

It got wet, or it sat somewhere humid. Selenite is gypsum at Mohs 2; water dissolves the surface into a chalky, pitted finish that cannot be restored. Dry-brush only from now on.

Is it safe to put crystals in a water bottle?

Only if the stone is a known water-safe silicate (quartz family) and untreated, and never for any toxic, soft, or porous stone. The safest "crystal water bottle" designs keep the stone in a sealed chamber that never touches the water you drink.

Does moonstone go in water?

Briefly, but don't soak it. Moonstone is a feldspar (Mohs 6-6.5) that tolerates a quick rinse, but it cleaves easily and prolonged water offers no benefit. Dry-wipe is safer.
