Six-sided quartz prisms, usually short and stubby where they line a geode wall, with colour concentrated in the terminations and fading to colourless or white toward the base. Colour zoning appears as straight-edged angular bands or as a chevron/zigzag pattern following growth faces, this angular zoning is diagnostic and dyes cannot reproduce it. Geode sections show a grey-white agate rind, then a druzy carpet of small purple points. Vitreous luster, conchoidal fracture, no cleavage.
How to tell
Scratches glass; fluorite (4) does not and shows flat octahedral cleavage faces that reflect like tiny mirrors. Genuine amethyst shows angular colour zoning under a light; dyed quartz shows colour trapped in fractures and a dead-uniform body.
