Amethyst

It took an age underground for one trace of iron to turn clear quartz purple. Nothing about that was fast.

Hold it up. The purple is not spread evenly. It sits in straight-edged bands where the crystal grew, darker at the point and almost clear at the base. A dye job cannot fake that shape.

You can explain your own family to a stranger with total accuracy. You can name exactly what is wrong with how everyone around you is living.

And you do it from six feet back, where it cannot reach you, because the analysis is the safest place you have ever found.
