Phantom Quartz

Hold it up and look straight down through the point. There is a smaller crystal in there, same shape, same faces, sitting exactly where it stopped.

It is not damage. It grew, paused while a fine film of another mineral settled over it, then carried on and sealed the old one inside.

Aries, there is a much younger version of you still making some of these decisions.

Somebody praised your speed before you were ten. It became the thing you were for, and you have been proving it ever since.

So a pause reads as failure to you. Every time you have stalled you have treated it as the end of the story. You have walked away from things that were only resting.

The pause is the reason there is anything to see.

Nothing was cleared out to make room for the new growth. The older crystal is still in there at full size, taking up its own space.

That is the whole thing. The new one did not replace anything, it just got built around what was already standing.

Taurus, you stopped trusting anything shiny and cheap, and there is a story under that.

Somebody sold you something once. Not a stone, probably. More likely a version of themselves, and you believed it in front of people who watched you believe it.

You did not get loud about it afterwards. You just took the trust back quietly and started checking things. Now you buy slowly and get called difficult by people who have never been that embarrassed.

Nothing had to be thrown out for you to grow.

Quartz sits at seven on the hardness scale and takes almost anything. Water, salt, a scrubbing brush, none of it reaches the phantom.

It sits inside the stone. There is no way to clean the earlier version off, which is the most honest thing about it.

Gemini, there is a smaller version of you sealed in there and she is the one who is tired.

Somebody at that table got bored easily. You learned before you were ten that a good story bought you your place and a flat true sentence bought you nothing.

Now you have three funny versions of the worst year of your life and no plain one. The plain one feels like it would not hold anybody. You have never tried it out loud.

Try it on one person this week.

The crystal grew for a long time, then stopped. Something changed in the water around it, and a fine film settled on every face and stayed there.

Then the conditions came back and it started again. The gap is the only part of its life you can actually see.

Cancer, something changed in the house one year and you have kept that exact face ever since.

There was a year where you were the one who noticed everything at home. You could feel the mood in a car before anybody spoke, and you got good at it because there was no other option.

Nobody has ever asked you about that year. They ask about the big obvious ones. That quiet stretch is the one that actually made you, and it does not come up.

Does anybody in your life know what it cost you?

Some phantoms are cast in resin and sold as the real thing. Look for a mould seam, and see how fast it warms in your hand, because real quartz stays cold longer.

A true phantom is hard-edged and copies the outer shape. Random smoke and cloud is just an inclusion with a good name attached.

Leo, you warm up too fast for anybody to check whether you meant it.

You learned that arriving warm made people relax, so you arrived warm, every time, for years. It stopped being a choice somewhere in your twenties.

There is somebody you keep being fine around. They think they know you, and they know the outer layer. You have never worked out how to say that without it sounding like an accusation.

The inside one is still full size.

Turn it slowly under a lamp and the inner outline goes sharp for a second. Hard edges, the same faces as the outside, a smaller copy in the exact spot it stopped.

Nothing was corrected. The old shape was not tidied away, it was built over and kept.

Virgo, there is an old version of you sealed inside this one and you still speak for her.

Somebody at home was unpredictable and your part was the only part that could be correct. You got the marks. The house stayed the same.

Now you edit an old email at eleven at night instead of writing the new one. You are doing the fixable thing while the real one waits. You have known that for a while.

The version you keep correcting is what the rest is standing on.

The phantom is not a flaw in the crystal. It is the surface the crystal had on the day it stopped, kept exactly as it was.

Dealers price it up for that. The pause is the reason anybody wants it.

Libra, there is a version of you from one particular year still sitting inside you, unfinished.

In that house one person's mood set the weather, so you learned to find the answer that would land softest and say that one instead. It worked. That is the problem.

Now somebody asks you a simple question and you check their face before you check yourself. There is a preference in there. It has just not been asked for in a very long time.

Answer once tonight without looking up.

No amount of cleaning touches it. Salt, water, sun, a full week on a windowsill, the phantom is sealed inside and none of it gets in.

That is the honest part. You cannot take the earlier version out of this crystal without destroying the crystal.

Scorpio, you stopped, took a coating of something, and started again without telling anybody.

They said it gently, which is why it stuck, and you were young enough to file it as information about yourself rather than about them.

So you built a smaller version to send in first and you have kept it in service for decades. The few people who have met the whole thing did not leave. You have quietly rewritten that as luck.

It was not luck.

It grew, stopped for a stretch, then grew again. The stop could have lasted longer than the growing did, and nothing in the stone tells you how long it was.

What the stone does say is that the pause did not finish it. The same crystal picked up where it left off.

Sagittarius, there is a smaller, earlier you sealed inside this one, and you have not spoken to her in years.

You had somebody narrating the risks before you asked, in detail, all through your childhood. Care arrived shaped like a fence, and you learned to read every fence as a challenge.

So you left, repeatedly, and some of those exits cost you people you would take back. Standing still felt like being caught, and nobody ever showed you the difference.

A pause is not a cage. Look what grew after it.

There is no treatment for this one. Nobody heats it, nobody dyes it, and nobody can put a phantom in afterwards. Resin casts try, and give themselves away with a seam.

The only reason it exists is that something interrupted it for long enough. The interruption is the product.

Capricorn, the interruption you are ashamed of is the most interesting thing about you.

If a day produced nothing you file it as wasted. The months you were flat go in that pile. So does the stretch where all you did was keep somebody else upright.

You were taught early that you would be loved for what you got done, and you built a whole adult life on that without ever checking it.

The interruption is the part people can see.

Look into it from the side and you can see two crystals in one stone. The smaller one is not floating. It is exactly where the bigger one used to end.

It kept its own edges the whole way through. Nothing about the new growth argued with it.

Aquarius, the fifteen year old you is still in there with her edges intact and you talk about her like a stranger.

You worked out around thirteen that if you could explain a group you did not have to risk being in it. That was a good answer at thirteen and nobody has looked at it since.

So now you read the table beautifully. Then you go home unable to say what you wanted from the evening. People call you the observant one, and it is not a compliment when it is the only thing on offer.

Say what you wanted. Out loud, to one person.

Both crystals in there are the same crystal. There is no separate small one, only the shape it had before the pause and the shape it has now, in one piece of quartz.

Nobody separated them because nobody could. They are continuous.

Pisces, there is a smaller you still in there, from the year everything stopped.

Somebody in that house had to be monitored, and you learned to feel a mood arriving before it got spoken, because early warning was the only defence a child had.

The monitoring never switched off. You come home from a normal Tuesday holding four other people's afternoons. When someone asks, you say you are just tired.

You keep apologising for the version of you that survived it.
