Bladed golden-bronze crystals radiating outward from central points into starbursts and fans across a contrasting grey, black or cream feldspar matrix, the star or wheel-spoke geometry is the name and the identification. The blades have a submetallic, greasy-to-pearly luster and are strongly pleochroic, shifting from deep red-orange to lemon yellow as the angle changes. Blades are flat and lath-like with a clear cleavage, and they are soft enough to scratch with a coin.

How to tell

Radiating star-shaped sprays of soft bronze blades (3, 4) on a light matrix is unique. Nuummite is hard, black-bodied and shows parallel needles rather than stars. Pyrite is much harder and forms cubes.

Often resin-stabilised for cutting because the blades pluck out of the matrix.
