Rutilated Quartz

It is quartz, so water and knocks and years do nothing to it. It scratches glass without trying.

The weak spot is the needles themselves. Where they reach the surface they leave a line, and a hard knock can split a slab straight along one.

Aries, the sharp thing in you got locked in years ago and you have built the whole life around it.

You have the plan. You have had it for months, and you open the notes app in bed and close it again.

It is not laziness. Somebody made you feel stupid early for getting something wrong in front of people. You have not risked a bad first attempt since.

Nobody ever showed you what a bad start looks like.

Hold it to a window. Those gold threads are titanium, dead straight and metallic, with a shine running along each one.

That straightness is the test. Fibre curls, and glass sparkles in an even cloud with bubbles in it. Rutile does neither.

Taurus, you stopped trusting anything cheap and shiny, and the reason has a name and a face.

Somebody sold you something warm once. It might have been a job, or a flat, or a person who was very sure about you for six weeks.

Now everything gets held up to the light first. People call it slow, and it is not slow. You are doing what nobody did for you at twenty-two.

Hold the next one up to the window too.

Those needles are not hair and they are not gold. They are rutile, a titanium mineral, and they grew before the quartz did.

The quartz arrived afterwards and sealed them exactly where they were. Renaissance Europe called them the hair of Venus and sold them for luck.

Gemini, the sharp things arrived first and everything charming about you grew around them.

You learned that a good version of a story gets you kept. A plain one at fourteen got you nothing but a change of subject.

So the plain one stopped existing. You can do six funny minutes on the year that nearly broke you. Nobody has ever asked a second question.

The needles came first. Everything else grew around them.

A hot crack in the rock filled with fluid, and titanium crystallised in it as thin straight needles. Quartz grew around them afterwards and sealed them in.

Nothing was inserted. The order of events is the whole story, and the shop calls it the hair of Venus instead.

Cancer, you grew around some sharp things and now they are set in you permanently.

You learned to hear a mood through a wall. Somebody in that house was hard to predict, and predicting them became the safest thing you could do.

Nobody has ever switched that off for you. You still arrive at a party and take everybody's temperature. By nine you are done and cannot say why.

Leave at nine. It is allowed.

Somebody makes glass with copper flecks in it and calls it goldstone. It goes out on the shelf beside this and costs almost nothing.

The tell is that the fake sparkles evenly all over, with bubbles. Real rutile is long and separate and unevenly spaced, because nobody arranged it.

Leo, there is a cheap sparkling thing on the shelf beside you and you have started counting.

Being the warm one worked when you were about six. Somebody in your family got easier when you performed, so you learned the trick and kept it.

Now you come out of a good evening with a full account of everyone in it. Ask you how you are and you say busy, and mean nothing by it.

Somebody would want the real answer.

It handles water and years and being carried loose in a bag. At seven on the hardness scale it will scratch a window.

The only weakness is where a needle breaks the surface. That line is where it goes if you drop it, and it is the same thing that makes it worth looking at.

Virgo, the flaws you would remove are load bearing.

There was a thing you could not do anything about. So you rewrote the plan, twice, and researched it properly, and got the folder in order.

The folder was excellent. It was also a way of never sitting down with what had actually happened to you.

You are allowed to start it badly.

Turn it in your fingers. The needles catch the light one at a time, and they sit at uneven distances because nothing about them was planned.

Fakes are even. Any time a stone looks too well organised, somebody organised it.

Libra, you keep trying to make the messy parts of your life look intentional to whoever asks.

In your house one raised voice could take a whole weekend with it. So you got quick at spotting the answer that left everybody level.

People read that as being easy company. It is unpaid work. You have been doing it since primary school and nobody has ever taken a turn.

Say the ungracious version once.

Take the romance out of it and these are titanium dioxide crystals. The same compound that goes into white paint, grown here as straight metallic needles.

They formed first, in a hot crack, and the quartz sealed around them later. Every gold line in there is older than the stone holding it.

Scorpio, one line got set inside you dead straight and nothing since has moved it.

They probably meant it as kindness. It still worked like an instruction, and you were young enough to take it as one.

So the real thing gets checked for cost before it gets said. People call that guarded. You are not guarded, you are doing sums in the middle of a conversation.

The oldest part of you is still in there.

The needles grew first. Titanium crystallised in a hot crack full of fluid, and quartz came along afterwards and locked all of it in place.

Nothing can be added to this and nothing can be taken out. What you see was decided before the stone existed.

Sagittarius, the sharp things went in first and everything you have built since has grown around them.

Somebody once told you no and the no was really about their own small life. You could see it, you were right, and being right that once taught you the wrong lesson.

Now every caution sounds like that one. You have started things you should not have and left things you should have kept.

Which one is this?

Renaissance Europe called these threads the hair of Venus and sold them as luck. It was good marketing four hundred years ago and it still is.

The threads are titanium. The luck was added by a merchant, and the stone never claimed any of it.

Capricorn, people credit you with things you never claimed and you let it stand.

Somebody in your house needed you steady, so you got steady, at about twelve. It worked, and working is exactly why it never stopped.

Now a day counts only if it produced something. Rest reads as slacking. The years you spent being the reliable one appear on no list you would call an achievement.

The needles did all their work before anybody was looking.

It survives almost everything. Water, salt, years in a drawer, a whole life in a coat pocket.

It fails along one line only, where a needle breaks the surface. The thing running through it is the thing it splits on.

Aquarius, the thing running the whole way through you is the one place you actually break.

Somebody at home was hard to predict, so you learned to work them out from a distance. That skill was the cleverest thing available to a child.

It never turned off, not once, not in twenty years. You can lay your own year out for a friend, causes in order. You watch yourself do it from the doorway.

Come in off the doorway.

Hold it up and look along one needle. It is dead straight and metallic, and it does not curl the way a fibre would.

That is how you tell it from glass. The fake has bubbles and an even sparkle, and it has never been near a rock.

Pisces, something got sealed inside you young and it has not moved since.

You were told you feel things too much by somebody who preferred you quieter. You were young, so you took it as information about yourself.

Now you get in first, every time, before anyone has said a word. You call yourself dramatic before anybody can. You apologise on your way into rooms you were invited to.
