Rutilated Quartz
quartz with rutile (TiO2) inclusions
Quartz that trapped needles of titanium dioxide as it grew, producing what looks like gold wire frozen mid-flight. Renaissance Europeans called it Venus's hair; the Brazilian mines call it stock. People carry it for clarity, abundance and courage. Tradition attaches it to the element fire, the solar-plexus, crown chakra, Sun.

What it is
Quartz that trapped needles of titanium dioxide as it grew, producing what looks like gold wire frozen mid-flight. Renaissance Europeans called it Venus's hair; the Brazilian mines call it stock. Fine reticulated specimens with intersecting needle nets are genuinely collectible.
What it is confused with
tourmalinated-quartz, actinolite-in-quartz, goldstone, gold-in-glass-fakes
Straight, rigid, metallic-lustred needles of rutile suspended inside the quartz, golden to coppery-red, sometimes near-black, often crossing at 60° or forming star-like sprays and reticulated nets. The needles are stiff and geometrically straight with a bright submetallic gleam; they do not curve or fray. They frequently pass right through the host and out the other side. Body quartz can be clear, smoky or milky. Under a loupe the needles show flat crystal faces, not fibres.
How to tell
Rutile needles are golden-red and metallic with visible reflective facets; tourmaline needles are matte black and thicker. Goldstone's sparkle is a dense cloud of identical tiny flecks in glass with bubbles, rutile needles are long, individual, and irregularly spaced.
What it means for you
The Moon is at 1° Scorpio today. Rutilated Quartz is a quartz, 7 on the Mohs scale, and it is the stone traditionally carried when the problem is proximity rather than intensity.

Rutilated Quartz for every sign
Aries
The Brazilian mines that supply it call it stock.
Renaissance Europeans called it Venus's hair. The Brazilian mines that supply it call it stock. The gold wires are rutile needles that grew inside the quartz while it formed, and any needle reaching the surface is a weak line a hard knock will split the stone along.
Taurus
Everything in it arrived during construction.
Titanium dioxide needles that were trapped while the quartz was still growing around them, stiff and metallic and often passing right through and out the other side. Fine reticulated specimens with intersecting nets are genuinely collectible. Everything in it arrived during construction.
Gemini
A clear head with the wiring left showing.
Renaissance Europeans called the golden needles Venus's hair. They are titanium dioxide, stiff and metallic, and they often run right through the crystal and out the other side. A clear head with the wiring left showing.
Cancer
What runs through the middle is where it breaks.
Brazil ships this out of Bahia by the crate. The golden needles are titanium dioxide, stiff and metallic, caught mid-flight in the quartz, and where one reaches the surface it leaves a weak plane a hard knock will split. What runs through the middle is where it breaks.
Leo
Gold that is structural rather than applied.
Renaissance Europeans called it Venus's hair. The gold wire is rutile, titanium dioxide, grown as rigid needles that the quartz closed around, and the best specimens have them crossing at sixty degrees in a net. Gold that is structural rather than applied, which is a distinction worth holding onto.
Virgo
The inclusion that makes it valuable is also the fault line.
Renaissance Europeans called the needles Venus's hair. They are rutile, titanium dioxide, stiff and metallic and frequently crossing at sixty degrees, and wherever one reaches the surface it leaves a weak plane that a hard knock will split. The inclusion that makes it valuable is also the fault line.
Libra
Venus's hair, and every strand of it is wire.
Needles of titanium dioxide caught inside the quartz as it grew, often crossing at sixty degrees in reticulated nets. Renaissance Europeans called it Venus's hair. Venus rules Libra, and this is the version of her that runs wire through everything instead of smoothing it over.
Scorpio
Nothing in it conceals the wiring.
Stiff metallic needles of titanium dioxide trapped inside the quartz as it grew, frequently passing straight through the crystal and out the far side. Renaissance Europeans called it the hair of Venus. Nothing in it conceals the wiring, which is not how you were built.
Sagittarius
Renaissance Europe called it Venus's hair. Bahia calls it stock.
Titanium dioxide needles trapped inside the quartz while it grew, straight and metallic and often passing clean through the crystal and out the other side. Renaissance Europe called it Venus's hair. Bahia calls it stock.
Capricorn
The structure and the fault line are the same feature.
Titanium dioxide needles caught inside quartz as it grew, rigid and straight and often crossing at sixty degrees. They run clean through the host, which means a slab will split along one if you drop it. The structure and the fault line are the same feature.
Aquarius
The needles read as circuitry, which is a coincidence of geometry.
Titanium dioxide needles caught inside the quartz while it grew, stiff and straight, often crossing at sixty degrees. Renaissance Europe called it Venus hair. The needles read as circuitry, which is a coincidence of geometry.
Pisces
The quartz grew around the rutile and kept it.
The quartz grew around the rutile and kept it. Golden titanium dioxide needles suspended mid-flight, stiff and straight, sometimes crossing at sixty degrees into nets. Renaissance Europe called it Venus hair and nobody has improved on that.

What tradition says
In crystal lore, the rutile needles are described as conducting or 'wiring' intention through the stone, and the material is associated with energy and drive rather than calm.
Care
- Water is fine. Dry it afterwards.
- Durable, but needles that reach the surface create weak lines — a hard knock can split a slab along an inclusion plane. Warm water only.
Common questions
What does rutilated quartz mean?
Rutilated Quartz is carried for clarity, abundance and courage. Quartz that trapped needles of titanium dioxide as it grew, producing what looks like gold wire frozen mid-flight.. Tradition links it to the solar-plexus, crown chakra.
Is rutilated quartz real or fake?
Rutilated Quartz is not faked often, but it is still worth checking. Rutile needles are golden-red and metallic with visible reflective facets; tourmaline needles are matte black and thicker. Goldstone's sparkle is a dense cloud of identical tiny flecks in glass with bubbles, rutile needles are long, individual, and irregularly spaced.
Can rutilated quartz go in water?
A short rinse is fine for rutilated quartz, then dry it.
Common · clear or smoky body with golden, copper, red or silver needles
