Tourmalinated Quartz

The black rods grew first, standing alone in the rock. Quartz came later and crystallised straight around them, sealing every one exactly where it stood.

Nothing had to break for that to happen. Two minerals took the same space and neither one moved over.

Aries, you think a limit is a fight you have to win in the room.

So you say nothing for months and then say all of it at once at eleven at night. Somebody taught you that the only way to be heard was to be loud.

It worked in that house. It has cost you two people since who would have listened at normal volume.

Put it under a lamp and look at the needles. They are dead black and flat looking, not gold and not shiny.

Gold and metallic means rutile, and rutile sells for more. Plenty of listings will never tell you which one you are actually buying.

Taurus, you have a nose for a thing that is priced wrong, and it was expensive to develop.

Somebody in your family talked about money in a way that made you feel unsafe. You still do the sums twice in the aisle, quietly, before you pick anything up.

The care is real and the shame attached to it is borrowed. Nobody handed you a floor, so you built one out of caution.

Keep the caution. Who taught you to be ashamed of it?

Water will not hurt it and the sun will not touch it. It is quartz, and quartz is patient about almost everything.

The weak point is the needles. They are softer than the body around them, so scrub a polished face and they pluck out and leave little pits.

Gemini, you talk around the black lines instead of near them, and they have not moved in years.

The plain answer is usually a no, and a no has never felt available to you. Somebody in your life got sulky when you disagreed. You learned to make refusal sound like a joke.

Now people cannot tell when you mean it, and you have decided that is your fault.

The joke was a door you were handed. You can walk out of it plainly.

What this actually is, is ordinary quartz with black tourmaline caught inside it. No damage, no repair, no drama anywhere in the making of it.

The tourmaline was standing there first and the quartz grew around it. That is the entire story.

Cancer, the dark bits in you are not damage, and you have spent years explaining them like they were.

You never learned to say a small no. In that house a small no was treated as an act of war, so you stopped attempting them.

Now you absorb everything, and then one Sunday you say something with real edges on it and frighten yourself.

It was not out of nowhere.

Somebody polished this. The face was worked flat, so the needles sit flush with the surface instead of standing proud of it.

That is also where it is vulnerable. The rods are softer than the quartz around them, so an abrasive cloth pulls them out and leaves pits.

Leo, you can hold a whole room and you cannot hold one limit inside it.

So you turn up depleted and charming and nobody notices, because you are extremely good at it.

Rutile would be metallic and gold. Sellers blur the two on purpose, because one of them costs more.

Libra, there are hard black lines running right through the clear part of you and you point at none of them.

Somebody's face fell once when you said what you wanted. You have never got that image out of your head, and you were young enough that it set.

Now every preference gets costed before it is spoken, and most of them do not clear the budget.

People who love you are not that fragile.

The one who was is not in the room any more.

It handles water and sun without complaint. Hardness seven, no fading, nothing dramatic required of you.

Strip the poetry off and this is quartz with black rods stuck inside it. There is no treatment, no dye and no oven anywhere in its history.

It is one of the few things on that shelf that is exactly what the label says. That is rarer than it ought to be.

You can name exactly what is wrong with a friend's relationship and you have never once turned that on your own.

Explaining is safer than needing. Somebody made needing look humiliating when you were young. You have been the analyst in the room ever since.

Somebody cut this and polished it flat, and that is the only human thing that ever happened to it. No dye, no heat, nothing to disclose.

Even that has a cost. Polish it too hard and the soft black rods lift out of the face and leave pits behind them.

Pisces, you grew right around the hard thing instead of asking it to move.

You were praised for being easy to be around before you could even read. Easy meant available, and available meant whoever needed you got you.

Now you feel a friend's bad week arriving through a text message and you cancel your own evening for it, automatically, with no decision anywhere in the process.

A door is not a wall.

It only has to shut sometimes.
