Black Onyx

chalcedony (agate)

Grey agate boiled in sugar and acid until it turns black, a treatment Pliny already knew about, which makes it one of the oldest continuous frauds in the gem trade, and also entirely traditional. Victorian mourning jewellery ran on it when jet ran short. People carry it for protection, grounding and boundaries.

Common

Essentially all commercial black onyx is grey agate soaked in a sugar solution then treated with sulfuric acid to carbonise the sugar in the porous bands — a Roman-era technique still in industrial use. The mineral is genuine; the colour is applied. Modern dyes are also used.

What it is

Grey agate boiled in sugar and acid until it turns black, a treatment Pliny already knew about, which makes it one of the oldest continuous frauds in the gem trade, and also entirely traditional. Victorian mourning jewellery ran on it when jet ran short. Naturally black onyx exists and is scarce.

What it is confused with

black-obsidian, jet, shungite, black-tourmaline, black-glass

Uniform, opaque, slightly warm-toned black with a high glassy polish and conchoidal fracture. It is not quite as cold-black as jet or as mirror-glossy as obsidian, and it shows no internal swirl or flow structure. Held to a very strong light, thin edges may transmit a faint brown or grey glow. Because nearly all of it is dyed, the black is dead-even with no tonal variation whatsoever; occasional pieces show a faint ghost of the original agate banding as slightly greyer parallel stripes.

How to tell

Scratches glass (jet and shungite do not, both are far softer and jet leaves a brown streak on unglazed tile). Obsidian shows glassy flow banding and a sharper conchoidal fracture; onyx does not. Onyx feels cool and dense; jet feels warm and light.

What it means for you

The Moon is at 1° Scorpio today. Black Onyx is a chalcedony, 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, and it is the stone traditionally carried when the problem is proximity rather than intensity.

Black Onyx for every sign

Aries

Pliny knew about it.

Grey agate boiled in sugar and then treated with sulfuric acid so the sugar carbonises black inside the porous bands. Pliny knew about it. Victorian mourning jewellery ran on the same process when Whitby jet ran short, and nearly every piece on sale today has been through that pot.

Taurus

Pliny described the technique and it is still in use.

Grey agate soaked in sugar solution and then treated with sulfuric acid so the sugar carbonises black inside the porous bands. Pliny described the technique and it is still in industrial use. Victorian mourning jewellery ran on it when Whitby jet ran short.

Gemini

Pliny already knew about the sugar and the acid.

Grey agate soaked in sugar solution and then sulphuric acid, which carbonises the sugar inside the porous bands and turns the whole stone black. Pliny already knew about it. Victorian mourning jewellery ran on the stuff when jet ran short, and the recipe has not changed.

Cancer

The mourning was real and the colour was cooked.

Victorian widows wore it by the pound when jet ran short. Under the black it is grey agate soaked in sugar and then sulphuric acid, which carbonises the sugar inside the porous bands, a method Pliny had already written down. The mourning was real and the colour was cooked.

Leo

The oldest fake in the trade is also the most traditional.

Sugar solution first, then sulphuric acid, which carbonises the sugar in the porous bands and turns grey agate dead black. Pliny recorded the trick, so it is roughly two thousand years old and entirely traditional. Victorian mourning jewellery ran on it once jet went scarce.

Virgo

One of the oldest continuous frauds in the gem trade.

Grey agate soaked in sugar solution and then sulfuric acid, which carbonises the sugar trapped in the porous bands and turns them black. Pliny documented the method. That makes it one of the oldest continuous frauds in the gem trade and a genuine tradition at the same time.

Libra

Pliny already knew the trick.

Grey agate soaked in sugar then treated with sulfuric acid, which carbonises the sugar inside the porous bands and blackens them. Pliny already knew the trick. Victorian mourning jewellery ran on it when jet ran short, so the black you are wearing is a substitution that held.

Scorpio

One of the oldest frauds in the trade, and traditional.

Grey agate boiled in sugar syrup and then soaked in sulfuric acid, which carbonises the sugar inside the porous bands and turns them black. Pliny already knew the trick. One of the oldest frauds in the gem trade and also entirely traditional, which is a distinction you are qualified to hold.

Sagittarius

Pliny already knew the trick.

Grey agate soaked in sugar syrup and then in sulphuric acid until the carbon blackens the porous bands. Pliny already knew the trick, which makes it one of the oldest frauds in the trade and entirely traditional at once. Victorian mourning ran on it when jet ran short.

Capricorn

Either the oldest fraud in the trade or the oldest tradition.

Nearly all of it is grey agate boiled in sugar and then sulfuric acid, which chars the sugar black inside the porous bands. Pliny already knew the method. That makes it either the oldest fraud in the gem trade or the oldest tradition in it.

Aquarius

The oldest fraud in the trade and also its oldest tradition.

Grey agate, soaked in sugar solution and then treated with sulfuric acid so the sugar carbonises inside the porous bands. Pliny described the method. It is the oldest fraud in the trade and also its oldest tradition.

Pisces

A lot of grief carried by a dye job.

It was grey agate until sugar solution soaked into the porous bands and sulfuric acid carbonised it there. The technique is Roman and still industrial. Victorian mourning ran on this material when Whitby jet ran short, which is a lot of grief carried by a dye job.

What tradition says

In crystal lore, black onyx is associated with endings, mourning and firm boundaries; Roman writers linked it to Mars and to steadiness in conflict.

Care

  • Water is fine. Dry it afterwards.
  • Stable and permanent as treatments go, but avoid strong solvents, acids and ultrasonic cleaners, which can leach dye out of poorly treated stock.
