Orthoceras

fossil nautiloid in black limestone

Straight-shelled nautiloids from Devonian and Ordovician seas, quarried by the tonne in the Erfoud region of Morocco and cut into slabs, spheres and towers. They predate ammonites and predate almost everything else you own by four hundred million years. People carry it for grounding, transformation and clarity. Tradition attaches it to the element water, the root, third-eye chakra, Saturn.

Common

Moroccan orthoceras slabs are routinely acid-etched to expose the fossils, then polished and often blackened or shoe-polished to deepen the matrix contrast. Some pieces are heavily restored or reassembled. This is standard commercial practice.

This one does not go in water. It dissolves.

What it is

Straight-shelled nautiloids from Devonian and Ordovician seas, quarried by the tonne in the Erfoud region of Morocco and cut into slabs, spheres and towers. They predate ammonites and predate almost everything else you own by four hundred million years. Nearly all commercial material is acid-etched and cosmetically blackened.

What it is confused with

ammonite, resin-cast-slabs, belemnite, black-marble, shiva-lingam

Long, straight, tapering cone-shaped fossils, like elongated ice-cream cones or bullets, lying in a polished black limestone slab, each divided into chambers by simple straight or gently curved partitions with a visible central tube (siphuncle) running down the length. Cream to tan against near-black rock. Fossils lie at random angles and overlap, and each is different. Manufactured imitations show identical repeated shapes in resin.

How to tell

Fossils must be straight cones with visible internal chamber walls and a central siphuncle, cut through at random angles by the slab surface. Vinegar fizzes on the limestone (do this on an edge only, it etches). Resin fakes are light, warm, and show repeated identical specimens.

Moroccan orthoceras slabs are routinely acid-etched to expose the fossils, then polished and often blackened or shoe-polished to deepen the matrix contrast. Some pieces are heavily restored or reassembled. This is standard commercial practice.

What it means for you

The Moon is at 1° Scorpio today. Orthoceras is a organic, 3-4 on the Mohs scale, and it is the stone traditionally carried when the problem is proximity rather than intensity.

Orthoceras for every sign

Aries

Four hundred million years old.

Four hundred million years old. Straight-shelled nautiloids, quarried by the tonne around Erfoud in Morocco, and nearly every slab has been acid-etched to expose the fossils and then blackened with polish to sharpen the contrast. That is standard practice rather than fraud.

Taurus

They predate almost everything else you own.

Straight-shelled nautiloids from Devonian seas, quarried by the tonne around Erfoud in Morocco and cut into slabs and towers. They predate almost everything else you own by four hundred million years. Nearly every slab has been acid-etched and then blackened with polish.

Gemini

The black background was applied with polish, not geology.

Erfoud in Morocco quarries these by the tonne, acid-etches the slabs to expose the fossils, then blackens the limestone so the contrast reads. The cones are straight-shelled nautiloids that predate ammonites by a very long way. Solvent lifts the black finish straight off, so use a dry cloth.

Cancer

Four hundred million years old, quarried by the tonne.

Four hundred million years old, straight-shelled, and older than almost anything else you will ever hold. They are quarried by the tonne around Erfoud in Morocco, acid-etched to expose them and then blackened for contrast. It is polished limestone, so water dulls it and solvent lifts the finish off.

Leo

Acid-etched, then shoe-polished. That is standard practice.

Four hundred million years, quarried by the tonne near Erfoud and cut into slabs, spheres and towers. Straight-shelled nautiloids that predate ammonites and nearly everything else in the case. Almost all commercial material is acid-etched to expose the fossils and then blackened with polish for contrast.

Virgo

Solvent lifts the applied black finish straight off.

Four hundred million years old, straight-shelled nautiloids that predate ammonites entirely, quarried by the tonne around Erfoud. Nearly every slab has been acid-etched to expose the fossils and then blackened with polish to deepen the matrix, which is standard and rarely mentioned. Solvent lifts the finish off.

Libra

The black is usually assisted, and rarely mentioned.

Straight-shelled nautiloids from Devonian seas, quarried by the tonne around Erfoud in Morocco and cut into slabs and spheres. The black is usually assisted: most commercial material is acid-etched to expose the fossils, then polished and darkened for contrast. Standard practice, rarely mentioned.

Scorpio

Four hundred million years old and cosmetically finished.

Straight-shelled nautiloids from Devonian and Ordovician seas, quarried by the tonne around Erfoud and cut into slabs, spheres and towers. Almost every commercial piece has been acid-etched to expose the fossils and then blackened to deepen the contrast. Four hundred million years old and cosmetically finished.

Sagittarius

They predate almost everything else you own by four hundred million years.

Straight-shelled nautiloids from Devonian seas, quarried by the tonne around Erfoud in the Moroccan Anti-Atlas and cut into slabs and spheres. They predate almost everything else you own by four hundred million years. Nearly all commercial material is acid-etched and cosmetically blackened.

Capricorn

Older than ammonites by four hundred million years.

Straight-shelled nautiloids from Devonian and Ordovician seas, quarried by the tonne around Erfoud in Morocco and cut into slabs, spheres and towers. They predate ammonites and predate almost everything else you own by four hundred million years. Nearly all commercial material is acid-etched and cosmetically blackened.

Aquarius

Four hundred million years old, finished with shoe polish.

Straight-shelled nautiloids from Ordovician and Devonian seas, quarried by the tonne around Erfoud and sliced into slabs. Almost every commercial piece has been acid-etched to expose the fossil and then blackened with polish to sharpen the contrast. Four hundred million years old, finished with shoe polish.

Pisces

Standard practice, and rarely mentioned.

Straight cones lying in polished black limestone, each divided into chambers with a siphuncle tube running down the middle. Almost all of it is acid-etched to expose the fossils and then blackened to sharpen the contrast, which is standard practice and rarely mentioned. Ordovician seas, Moroccan quarries.

What tradition says

In crystal lore, orthoceras is associated with deep time, ancestral knowledge and grounding into the very long view; the attribution rests on its age rather than on any historical tradition.

Care

  • Do not put this one in water. It dissolves or spalls. Dust it dry.
  • Salt scratches it. Do not bury it in salt.
  • It is polished limestone: acids dissolve it, water dulls the finish, and salt etches it. The applied black finish can be wiped off with solvents. Dry cloth only.

Common questions

What does orthoceras mean?

Orthoceras is carried for grounding, transformation and clarity. Straight-shelled nautiloids from Devonian and Ordovician seas, quarried by the tonne in the Erfoud region of Morocco and cut into slabs, spheres and towers.. Tradition links it to the root, third-eye chakra.

Is orthoceras real or fake?

Moroccan orthoceras slabs are routinely acid-etched to expose the fossils, then polished and often blackened or shoe-polished to deepen the matrix contrast. Some pieces are heavily restored or reassembled.. Fossils must be straight cones with visible internal chamber walls and a central siphuncle, cut through at random angles by the slab surface. Moroccan orthoceras slabs are routinely acid-etched to expose the fossils, then polished and often blackened or shoe-polished to deepen the matrix contrast.

Can orthoceras go in water?

No. Orthoceras dissolves or spalls in water. Dust it dry instead of soaking it, and keep it out of salt.
