Nuummite

Crystal lore calls this the sorcerer's stone. That name is barely a hundred years old and it was written by people selling rocks.

The rock itself is about three billion. It was volcanic rock near what is now Nuuk in Greenland, buried and cooked until it rebuilt itself into needles.

Aries, you have never needed a title to go first.

Somewhere back there somebody made you prove you belonged before you were let in. You were young and you took it in, and now you announce yourself before anybody gets the chance to ask.

The announcing is exhausting and it is not doing anything. The people who matter worked out what you were in the first ten minutes.

You do not have to keep introducing yourself.

Somebody will sell you goldstone instead. That is glass with copper stirred through it, and it costs a fraction of the price.

Goldstone sparkles evenly all over and has bubbles in it. Real nuummite flashes in hard straight lines that vanish the moment you tilt it.

Taurus, you have never quite forgiven yourself for the time you were taken in.

It was not the money. You had told somebody you loved it first, out loud, before you found out.

Now you research a thing for a fortnight and buy none of it. Being wrong in front of a person is the part you are actually avoiding.

What else are you not buying because of one afternoon?

Nobody polished it into being interesting. It was already one of the oldest things a person can wear.

Gemini, you have never trusted anything to be enough on its own, least of all you.

It started at a table where the quick child got the attention, so you learned to add things. A detail, a joke, a better ending than the one that happened.

Now you cannot hand somebody a plain fact about your life without decorating it. You are not sure what is left underneath.

Polished nuummite handles daily wear without much fuss. It sits around 5.5 to 6 for hardness, and warm water and a soft cloth are all it asks for.

Raw rock is another matter. Never dry-grind or sand it. The needles in this mineral family can grow in a form nobody should ever breathe.

Cancer, you ask for almost nothing and everybody has quietly taken that as permission.

You became the safe one young, in a house where somebody had to be, and you were the one who could. It made you loved and it made you load-bearing at the same time.

So the midnight calls come to you and nobody rings to ask about your week. You stopped noticing that a long time ago.

Somebody would take a turn if you let it be their turn.

Hold it under a lamp and turn it slowly. For most of that turn it is a plain black pebble and nothing else.

Then gold and bronze cross it in straight lines and go again. It shows at one angle only, and it never showed at all for the people who could not be bothered turning it.

Leo, you have been doing the flash on demand since school.

Somebody's attention moved somewhere else once and you felt it go. You decided then that you would never be caught unlit again, so now you walk into rooms already switched on.

Nobody has met you at the angle where you are just black rock. You have started to think that person is not worth much.

That one is the oldest part of you.

The sorcerer's name on this stone is modern. The lore around it is roughly a century old and it was attached by people moving stock.

The rock underneath is about three billion years old, from around Nuuk in Greenland. It never needed the story anybody hung on it.

The night something real went wrong, you sorted the drawer of old chargers. You know exactly what you are doing and knowing does not stop it.

Somebody will hand you astrophyllite and call it nuummite. It is a fair mistake to make and it is also a cheaper stone to buy.

Astrophyllite is soft, around 3 to 4, and its bronze sprays radiate out like small stars. Nuummite is harder, and its flashes run in parallel lines.

Libra, you would sooner take the wrong stone than make the seller feel bad.

You do this everywhere. You eat the wrong meal, you keep the wrong plans, you say whatever keeps the table pleasant.

You learned to manage one person's mood before you could properly read. Being easy was never a personality. It was a job.

None of that was gentle and none of it shows. The stone stays flat black until the light catches it at exactly the right angle.

Nuummite takes ordinary wear without much trouble. Water is fine, a soft cloth is fine, and the flash does not fade in daylight.

The one hard rule is dust. Do not dry-cut, grind or sand the raw rock. The needles in this mineral family can grow in a form nobody should breathe.

Sagittarius, you are much older on the inside than anybody who knows you would guess.

The adults who handed you rules were unhappy, and you noticed that early, so you decided the rules were the cause. You got out young and you have kept getting out since.

Some of those rules were people trying to keep you. You have never been able to tell those two apart from a distance.

This one is real. Wet the blade.

Put it on the desk and turn it a quarter at a time. Most of the turn shows nothing at all, then gold crosses it in one straight line and is gone.

That is three billion years of buried rock doing the only thing you can actually see. Everything else it did happened where nobody was watching.

Capricorn, you turn away the second somebody catches the good part of you.

Days with no output get filed as wasted ones. So do the nights you sat up with somebody frightened, and the years you spent keeping a family working while holding down a job.

You learned early that you would be kept for what you carried. You have never risked finding out what happens if you put some of it down.

Set one thing down. Small. This week.

This is not really a crystal. It is a whole rock, a mass of amphibole needles grown through each other while it cooked deep underground.

That is why the flash arrives in straight bands instead of one clean face. The pattern is ancient and nobody designed it.

Aquarius, you are made of about four different people and you introduce whichever one the evening needs.

You can lay out a friend's whole situation in two sentences and be exactly right about it. Then you go home to a six-year pattern of your own and cannot find its edges.

Inside was not somewhere you were allowed to be, so you learned to watch from outside. Nobody has ever mentioned that you could stop.

The door was never locked from your side.

Somebody sat and polished this so the flash would come out. Rough nuummite looks like a wet stone from a car park and nobody buys those.

The polishing is the honest part of it. What is less honest is the modern name, the sorcerer's stone, invented about a century ago to shift stock.

Pisces, most people only see the plain black of you because they never turned you to the light.
