Black Obsidian
Obsidian (amorphous, not a mineral)
Obsidian never got to be a crystal. Lava met air and cooled so fast the atoms stopped where they stood. What you hold is glass, made in seconds. That speed is why it cuts. Stone age hands knapped it into blades finer than a scalpel. Later people ground it flat and used it to see. Much of the black glass in shops was never volcanic. Hold a thin edge to a lamp, real obsidian glows smoky brown. You have been circling something for months. You look at it sideways, in the car, at two in the morning, never straight on. Someone taught you early that looking at a hard thing makes it real. So you kept it at the edge of your eye. It was already real. Nothing breaks because you looked.
People carry it for protection, shadow work and grounding. Tradition attaches it to the element fire, the root chakra, Pluto. It is most often given to Scorpio, Capricorn, Sagittarius. It measures 5-6 on the Mohs scale.

What it is confused with
Black onyx, jet, shungite, black tourmaline, black glass, hematite
Obsidian is pure black glass with a mirror-bright shine. Break it and the edge is curved and shell-like, razor sharp, with fine ripple lines spreading out from the point of impact. There are no crystals, no grain and no flat split planes inside it. The only internal structure you may see is swirl banding left by the lava flow. Backlight a thin flake or a chipped edge and it passes smoky brown-grey light. That is the fastest way to prove it is glass rather than jet or onyx. It also warms in your hand faster than quartz.
How to tell
Hold a thin edge up to a bright light. Obsidian glows translucent brown. Onyx and jet stay dark. Obsidian is softer than onyx, 5 to 6 against 7, so a quartz pebble will scratch it, and it will not confidently scratch a glass bottle. Jet is far lighter, warm to the touch, and leaves a brown mark on an unglazed tile. Obsidian leaves a white one.
Natural obsidian is untreated. It is already glass, so there is nothing to improve. What does happen is manufactured black glass and slag glass being sold as obsidian. Look for a mould seam, perfectly round bubbles and a shape that is too tidy to be natural.

What it means
The moon is in Gemini today, so this is the Gemini read.
You can make a bad week sound like an anecdote.
Hold a thin edge up to a lamp. Real obsidian goes translucent and glows a smoky brown, because it is glass all the way through.
That is the whole test and it takes four seconds. Black onyx will not do it, and neither will jet.
Gemini, nothing in your life has been allowed to happen slowly, and you arranged most of that.
You can make a bad week sound like an anecdote. You have done it at a table and got a laugh in the right place. Everybody at it thought you were fine.
That trick started as a way to keep a room easy when you were small. It worked so well that the flat true answer has never had a listener.
Give somebody the flat one.

Black Obsidian for every sign
AriesEver since, going slowly has felt like disappearing.
Obsidian is not a crystal. Lava met open air and cooled so fast that the atoms stopped where they stood, so what you hold is glass.
It was made in seconds. That speed is exactly why a broken edge cuts, and stone age hands knapped it into blades finer than a scalpel.
Aries, you were never taught what to do with a fast thing once it slows down.
You go at something hard for two weeks and then it goes ordinary and you feel tricked. It is not that you cannot commit.
At home, being fast was the thing that got noticed. You were about seven. Ever since, going slowly has felt like disappearing.
Try being seen at half speed.
TaurusYou remember the exact moment the story stopped working.
A lot of the black glass in shops was never volcanic. Manufactured glass and slag glass get sold as obsidian and most buyers never check.
Look for mould seams and perfectly round bubbles. Backlight a thin edge and real obsidian glows smoky brown.
Taurus, you check things now because of one specific time you did not.
Somebody sold you a story and you paid for it in full. You remember the exact moment the story stopped working.
Now nothing gets wanted until it gets weighed. People say you are hard to please. You are somebody who learned the hard way and did not get a refund.
Hold the edge to a lamp. Then decide.

CancerYou spent years being the one who could cope.
Obsidian had no long slow growing time. Lava hit open air and froze in seconds, which is why it never became a crystal.
It is not a mineral at all. It is glass, and the thing everybody finds calming about it happened faster than a kettle boils.
Cancer, something froze in you the moment it hit open air, and it never got to finish forming.
You spent years being the one who could cope. Then a plan changed by text and you could not get off the bed.
You were made responsible far too early. Responsible people do not get warned, they get relied on, and nobody checks whether they are still upright.
Are you still upright?
LeoYou fill a silence before anyone else notices it is there.
Obsidian handles water and salt without any trouble. What it does not handle is being knocked.
It chips into flakes that are genuinely sharp, so a raw piece loose in a pocket will cut something. The same fineness that made it a blade makes it fragile.
Leo, you can take years of ordinary hardship and not one careless remark.
You are the one who keeps things going. You fill a silence before anyone else notices it is there. You do it in your own house too.
That came from a house where one person's mood set the day. Reading faces was survival then, and nobody ever came along and told you it was over.
Let one room go quiet.
VirgoThe conversation you actually owe somebody is now about eleven months old.
Some of the black glass sold as obsidian came out of a factory. Slag glass and moulded glass turn up under the same label constantly.
A moulded piece has a seam and perfectly round bubbles. Real obsidian broke the way glass breaks, in curved shells, with no two pieces alike.
Virgo, you never got the slow years, so you learned to be finished fast.
The shelf got sorted on Sunday. The conversation you actually owe somebody is now about eleven months old.
At about seven you learned that a neat house made the adults calmer, and it worked, which is the awful part. Nobody has ever told you that you are off duty.
Have the conversation. The shelf keeps.
LibraYou learned to read a face across a dinner table before you could read a clock.
Turn a broken piece over in your hands. The break is curved, like the inside of a shell, because glass has no grain to follow.
Every one of those curves ends in an edge. People ground this flat for mirrors, and Aztec and Mixtec traditions used polished obsidian mirrors for divination.
Libra, you have no grain to follow when you are on your own, and evenings are when that gets loud.
You run the room before you speak. Who will go quiet, who will sulk, who will hear a no as a verdict.
You learned to read a face across a dinner table before you could read a clock. Nobody gave you that job and nobody has ever taken it off you.
Look at it straight on. Then answer.
ScorpioSomebody taught you early that looking at a hard thing makes it real.
Obsidian never got the slow years. Lava cooled too fast for crystals to grow, so it stopped exactly as it was, in glass.
That is why it became the mirror stone. Aztec and Mixtec traditions polished it flat and looked into it, and it has been used for unflinching looking ever since.
Scorpio, you have been circling something for months without once looking at it straight.
You check it sideways. In the car. At two in the morning when nothing else is on.
Somebody taught you early that looking at a hard thing makes it real. So you learned to keep it at the edge of your eye. It was already real.
Nothing breaks because you looked.
SagittariusYou do not tell people when something went wrong.
Obsidian is chemically fine with water and with salt. Nothing chemical touches it. It is the knocks that ruin it.
A dropped piece flakes into edges sharp enough to draw blood. That is not a warning about the stone, it is a warning about your pocket.
Sagittarius, everything happened to you too fast to make sense of, and you have been outrunning that since.
You have gone anyway, and most of the best things in your life came out of that. You have also been wrong in public more than once.
The part nobody sees is the cost sheet you keep private. You do not tell people when something went wrong. The first time you did, somebody said they knew it would.
You do not owe anybody an I told you so.
CapricornYou were maybe nine, and you have been producing ever since to stop it happening again.
Obsidian is glass, not a mineral. It never grew a structure because the lava cooled before it had the chance.
It got its name from a Roman account, from a man called Obsius. The stone had been useful to people for far longer than it had a name.
Capricorn, you were useful to people long before anybody gave you a name for it.
Only finished things count in your head. The evening you spent talking a friend out of something does not.
At home you got noticed when you produced and overlooked when you did not. You were maybe nine, and you have been producing ever since to stop it happening again.
It was never the producing they stayed for.
AquariusYou come across as somebody who has already sorted it.
Somebody worked out that black glass sells if you call it obsidian. Moulded glass and slag glass go out under the name every week.
The mineral world does not police that. The only defence is a lamp and a thin edge, plus four seconds of actually looking.
Aquarius, you have been lied to enough that checking things is now the only way you know how to love.
You told a friend what was really going on in her house and she went quiet, because you were right. You are usually right.
Nobody has done that for you. You come across as somebody who has already sorted it. You have never once said different.
Say different, once, to one person.
PiscesBy nine at night none of it is labelled with whose it was.
Put it on a table and look into it. Polished obsidian gives you back a dark version of your own face, which is why people made mirrors from it.
It is glass, made in seconds by lava hitting open air. The oldest use of it is looking, not carrying. Nobody had to change it to make it useful.
Pisces, you got sharp in one bad season and people still treat it like your personality.
You come home holding what was in the room. By nine at night none of it is labelled with whose it was.
At home you knew before anybody spoke. Everybody called that lovely, and lovely is what people call a thing they intend to keep using.

What tradition says
Aztec and Mixtec tradition used polished obsidian mirrors for divination, and that use is documented. The name comes from a man called Obsius in Pliny's account. In crystal lore today, obsidian is kept for looking at yourself without flinching and for cutting attachments.
Care
- Water is fine. Dry it afterwards.
- The real hazard here is your hands. It chips into genuinely sharp flakes. Do not carry raw pieces loose in a pocket with other stones. Water is fine. The stone is chemically inert and very little touches it.
