Smoky Quartz

A lab can make smoky quartz in an afternoon. Clear quartz goes in, a beam of radiation hits it, and it comes out dark.

That is a treatment, not a fake, and it is not radioactive afterwards. It is just fast.

Aries, fast is the only speed anybody ever praised you for.

You learned that somewhere. Probably in a house where whoever moved first got the credit and whoever waited got nothing.

So you start hot. You are astonishing in week one. Then week three arrives with no applause in it and you go looking for another week one.

Nobody ever stayed with you through a middle. That is not a flaw in you. It is a gap in your training.

The natural stones went dark slowly. Nobody clapped once.

Smoky quartz is plain quartz carrying one trace of aluminium. The faint radiation of the granite around it works on that trace for longer than anything you will ever wait for.

Then somebody built a machine that does it in a day and sells the result at the same table.

Taurus, you can smell a shortcut from across a room.

Somebody sold you something once, when you were young enough to believe them. You went home pleased. Then you found out, and the finding out is the part you still carry.

Now you check labels. You touch things before you buy them, and people call it stubbornness because they never had to earn back what you lost.

You are not slow. You are careful, and careful cost you something.

Hold this one to the light. Natural pieces go paler at the base.

It is quartz. The same clear quartz as everything else, holding one trace of aluminium, darkened by the ordinary radiation of the rock it grew in.

The dark was not added. It is what plain quartz does when it is left alone long enough.

Gemini, you went dark by degrees over about four years and you have a funny line ready for every one of them.

It started as a way to be worth listening to. Somewhere there was a table where the quiet true thing you said got talked over. The clever version did not.

So you got good. Very good. Now people know the funny one and almost nobody has met the one who is tired.

The plain answer was always enough. You just never got to test it.

What would you say tonight if you said it flat?

Leave smoky quartz in a bright window and the colour bleaches out. Heat above two hundred degrees does the same. Neither one comes back.

It survives water. It survives salt. What it does not survive is the slow steady exposure it never notices.

Cancer, you have been left in the wrong light for too long and some of it is not coming back.

It was the small thing repeated. A tone at breakfast. A person who was never once cruel and never once warm, for eleven years.

You can handle a crisis. You are the one everybody calls at two in the morning. It is the ordinary Tuesday that takes the colour out of you.

You are allowed to name that as damage. It counts even though nobody shouted.

Move it off the sill tonight.

Hold one up to a lamp. Even the near-black pieces let brown light through at the thin edges, and you can see the growth lines running straight.

Most people never lift it. They see black, they decide black, and they put it back down.

Leo, even at your darkest you keep a light on at the edges for other people.

You know who is uncomfortable, who is being left out, who needs the joke right now. You learned it early, in a house where somebody's mood set the weather and you got very good at forecasting.

Then a friend asks how you are and there is a delay, because you genuinely have to go and look.

Nobody has held you up to the light in a while. You have not asked them to.

Ask one person this week.

Natural smoky quartz darkened over spans you cannot picture. One trace of aluminium, and the faint everyday radiation of granite, working on it with no schedule at all.

Nobody checked its progress. It was not behind.

Virgo, you went dark slowly over years and people keep treating it like it happened last month.

The spreadsheet gets done. The cupboard gets sorted. The one conversation that would actually change your life stays exactly where it was in March.

It made sense once. There was a year when the only thing you could control was small and near, so you controlled it perfectly and it kept you upright.

The small things were never the problem and you have always known it.

That is not a failure. It is a survival that outstayed its use.

Somebody put clear quartz in a radiation beam and pulled out a black stone. It is a real treatment with a real name, and the shop simply does not mention it.

The stone did not pick that colour. It was given one, and now it is expected to be that.

Libra, something happened to you that nobody in your life mentions, so you leave it out too.

You already know what you want for dinner, where you want to live, and which friend is bad for you. You say you do not mind because minding out loud has a cost. You have been paying it since you were small.

Somewhere there was a house where having a preference made the room go quiet.

So you got easy, and easy is very lonely from the inside.

Who is it costing you to be this agreeable?

Smoky quartz takes water. It takes salt, and years in a coat pocket, and being dropped on a kitchen floor.

Sunlight is the one thing it cannot take. Bright light bleaches it pale and the dark never comes back.

Scorpio, you can name the exact year the dark went into you.

Probably more than one somebody. Probably in those exact words, at a kitchen table, and you can still name the year.

So you learned to hand people the version they could hold. The rest goes in a drawer. You are not bitter about it, you are just tired of the sorting.

The depth was never too much. It was too much for one person, in one kitchen, once.

That is a smaller fact than you made it.

It is aluminium. One trace of it inside ordinary quartz, plus the faint radiation every granite gives off, and that is the whole recipe for the dark.

The label on the tray says protection. The rock says a slow accident that nobody supervised.

Sagittarius, you went dark slowly, over years, and everyone around you thinks it started last month.

Somebody spent your childhood telling you what you could not do, and you built a whole person out of proving them wrong. It worked. It also means you have never turned back from anything, because turning back would feel like agreeing with them.

There are doors you walked through that you did not want, only because someone said no first.

You are allowed to leave a thing that is not for you. That is not the same as losing.

Nothing to prove tonight.

The colour arrived with no witness. A trace of aluminium in ordinary quartz, worked on by the faint radiation of the granite around it, over spans with nothing to show at the end of any given day.

Nobody could have measured a week of that. It was still happening.

Capricorn, you measure yourself against a single day and you have never once passed.

If a day produced nothing you file it as wasted, and the pile is enormous by now. The months you spent driving somebody to appointments are in there. So is every hour you held steady so other people could fall apart properly.

You decided young that you would be kept for what you carried. Nobody asked you to decide that. You watched, and drew a conclusion, and have run on it since.

Put one unpaid thing on this week's list and let it be the whole list.

Set it on the sill and it looks solid black. Pick it up, turn it, and brown light comes through the thin edge.

Most people never turn it. They read the surface and move on, and the shop is perfectly happy with that.

Aquarius, most people never turn you round, and you have got comfortable being read from the front.

You can tell a friend exactly why her relationship is going the way it is going, kindly, in one paragraph, and be right. Your own is fog.

It is not a blind spot. It is a position problem. You cannot see the shape of a room from inside it.

You have been inside this one since you were nine. Who have you actually let close enough to tell you?

Somebody worked out you can do this in an afternoon. Clear quartz, a radiation beam, and out comes a stone dark all the way through.

Natural pieces keep a paler zone near the bottom. That soft edge is the giveaway, and it is the part the machine cannot copy.

Pisces, you were changed fast by something outside you, and you were never given a door either.

Other people's moods come in without knocking. You have spent your whole life being told to grow one, as if a door were something you were withholding on purpose.

So you left parties early. You went quiet in cars. You called it being tired because it was easier than explaining.

The softness is not the flaw. The missing door is not a defect, it is a fact nobody ever helped you plan around.

Put your back to a wall tonight and notice how much less work the room is.
