What it is
A record of the radioactivity of the rock it grew in. Smoky quartz is ordinary quartz darkened over long ages by natural radiation acting on a trace of aluminum. But a lot of the very dark, evenly black stuff on the shelf was zapped in a lab instead, which is a treatment, not a fake mineral, and it is not radioactive afterward. The tell is unnatural uniform black-brown with no pale base zone, sometimes a muddy olive cast. Natural stones fade paler toward the base. In old stories it grounds and absorbs the negative.

Transparent to translucent brown-grey with the standard quartz prism, horizontal prism striations and six-faced termination. Colour is usually zoned, deeper toward the termination, paler or colourless toward the base where it grew off the matrix, and the zoning follows crystal growth planes as sharp straight bands. Conchoidal fracture, vitreous luster, no cleavage. Irradiated commercial material is often uniformly near-black with a slight muddy or greenish cast and shows colour right down into the broken base.

How to tell
Hold to a strong light: real smoky quartz transmits brown light at the thin edges even when dark, and shows straight-line growth zoning. Obsidian shows no crystal faces and no zoning, only glassy swirl. Topaz has one perfect cleavage direction and will show a flat cleavage step; quartz never does.
