Desert Rose
Gypsum (or barite) with included sand
A shallow desert pool dried out. As the water left, gypsum crystallised in the wet sand and stacked into petals, closing around the grains as it grew. Water undoes all of that. Wash it or mist it and the petals soften and collapse. Keep it dry and keep salt away from it. A fingernail marks it. It is about as sturdy as a pressed flower. The story about a guardian living in each rosette is modern, read straight off the shape. That does not make it useless to you. You feel scattered because you are carrying four people's schedules and none of your own. Put it somewhere dry and leave it alone. It has done fragile before.
People carry it for grounding, protection and calm. Tradition attaches it to the element earth, the root, crown chakra, Venus. It is most often given to Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. It measures 2-3.5 on the Mohs scale.

What it is confused with
Barite rose, calcite rose, selenite, sandstone concretion
Flat bladed crystals grown into one another and spreading from a single centre, literally a stone flower. Each petal is a tabular crystal edged in sand. The surface is gritty and matte rather than glassy, because sand grains were built in as it grew. The colour is always the colour of the desert sand it formed in. Gypsum roses are very soft and a fingernail marks them. Barite roses are harder, around 3 to 3.5, heavier for their size, and usually a deeper red-brown.
How to tell
Try a fingernail first. If it scratches, you have a gypsum desert rose. If a fingernail fails but a copper coin marks it, and the piece feels noticeably heavy for its size, it is a barite rose. Neither one fizzes in vinegar. A calcite rose does.

How it forms
Desert rose forms as salty water evaporates from desert sand, so gypsum crystallises in the damp ground and grows in blades that trap sand grains as they spread.

What it means
The moon is in Sagittarius today, so this is the Sagittarius read.
Somebody spent your childhood listing what would go wrong, and almost none of it did.
This one takes almost nothing. Dust is fine. Dry air is fine. Water is the end of it, and so is salt.
It grew out of salty water in the first place. The same thing that made it will take it apart, and the shop card leaves that off.
Sagittarius, you grew up quick in a dry place, and you have been carrying the grit ever since.
Somebody spent your childhood listing what would go wrong, and almost none of it did. So you binned the whole category. It has taken you places the careful people never got near. You would not trade a day of it.
This is not one of the dramatic warnings. It is one tap and one bad afternoon.
Keep it away from the sink.

Desert Rose for every sign
AriesWhen a thing slows down you take it as a verdict on you.
Put a fingernail to one petal and press. It marks. That is gypsum, and gypsum is about as tough as a pressed flower.
Water finishes it entirely. One rinse under a tap and the petals soften and the whole rosette goes down.
Aries, you are hard about everything except one person, and water is what takes you apart.
You can name what you began this year. Somebody praised how fast you were when you were small, and you have been going back for that face ever since. When a thing slows down you take it as a verdict on you.
It is not a verdict on anything. It is just the stretch where nobody is watching you work.
Do not wash this one. Ever.
TaurusIt was sitting in the car afterwards, going back over exactly where you stopped checking.
This is gypsum with sand caught inside it. A shallow salt pool dried out, and the crystals grew in the damp ground and trapped the grains as they spread.
It is not sturdy and nobody in the shop says so. A fingernail marks it. Water takes it apart completely.
Taurus, you built a solid life out of whatever was to hand, and you have never told anybody how easily it comes apart.
Somebody sold you a version of themselves once and you bought the whole thing. It was not the money that stayed. It was sitting in the car afterwards, going back over exactly where you stopped checking.
You check everything twice now and call it sensible. It has kept you safe and it has kept you out of a few rooms you wanted.
This one needs a dry shelf and no handling.
GeminiYou saw it, and you have not risked ordinary since.
Somebody decided each rosette holds a guardian. That reading is modern and it came straight off the shape of the thing.
What is actually true is smaller and better. A pool of salty water dried up and gypsum grew in the wet sand, closing around the grains.
Gemini, you spread out fast in dry conditions and you have never once tested what water does to you.
You are quick and it has always worked for you. Somebody once looked bored while you were being ordinary. You saw it, and you have not risked ordinary since. Now you can hold a table all night and get home having said nothing true.
The people who love you are waiting for the flat sentence. Nothing built on it.
What is the plain thing you have not said yet?
CancerYou took that on before you were ten.
This survives dry air, dust and being left alone for years. What kills it is water. One mist and the petals soften and go.
Salt does the same. The thing it was born out of is the thing that ends it, which nobody prints on the label.
Cancer, you can be left alone for years, and one kind word out of nowhere takes you apart.
You knew before anyone spoke when the house had turned. Somebody in there needed one person who stayed level. You took that on before you were ten. So you enter rooms slowly and check the ground first.
People read that as distance. It was never distance. It was a child who found out what a sudden change does to a house.
Dry shelf. Out of the way.
LeoYou have been running on the small answer for years and calling it fine.
A shallow pool sat in the desert and slowly went. As the water left, gypsum grew in the damp sand, blade by blade, closing around the grains.
The whole shape came from something disappearing. Put water back and it undoes itself.
Leo, the best of you formed while somebody was walking away.
You know who has gone quiet and you go and ask. When they turn it round on you, you give the short answer and hand it back. Taking that much room stopped feeling safe a long time ago.
So nobody asks twice. You have been running on the small answer for years and calling it fine.
Somebody should get the long answer tonight.
VirgoNow you can clean a whole kitchen and still not have looked at the thing.
Pick it up carefully. The petals snap under almost nothing, and a fingernail leaves a mark in the surface.
It formed in a drying pool and it stays whole only as long as it stays dry. Water collapses the whole rosette.
Virgo, you were formed by a dry stretch and you have never trusted an easy one since.
The tidiest evenings are the hardest ones. Somebody in your house needed the practical one and you put your hand up. Now you can clean a whole kitchen and still not have looked at the thing.
What you are avoiding is not on any list. It cannot be completed, and you are not failing at it.
What are you tidying around tonight?
LibraNo one ever came back to say it was finished.
The guardian in the rosette is a modern idea. Somebody looked at the shape and read a story off it, and that story sells.
The real history is a salt pool drying out in Morocco or Tunisia and gypsum growing in the wet sand as the water pulled back.
Libra, somebody decided years ago what you were for, and you live inside their reading of you.
You run the whole room before you answer. Somebody's mood used to depend on whatever you said next, and you were far too young for that work. Now a question about the weekend can take you ten minutes and leave you flat.
You were given that job at nine. No one ever came back to say it was finished.
It is finished.
ScorpioShe works so well that most of the people in your life have only met her.
Underneath the name this is a soft mineral with sand stuck through it. Gypsum. It marks under a fingernail.
Wash it and it stops existing. There is no version of this stone that survives being handled the way you would handle quartz.
Scorpio, you closed around what you grew up in, grain by grain, and you have never let it go.
It was one sentence and you did not fight it. You went off and built a smaller version to bring out around people. She works so well that most of the people in your life have only met her.
Running her costs you every day. You are the only one paying for it.
When did you last let somebody see the size of you?

This is not one of the dramatic warnings. It is one tap and one bad afternoon.
Keep it away from the sink.
CapricornWhat you were actually doing was keeping a person from going under.
The water in a shallow desert pool went slowly, over seasons, not in one go. Gypsum grew in the wet sand the whole time it was leaving.
Nobody watched that happen and nothing was recorded. The shape is the only evidence there ever was a pool.
Capricorn, you grew the most while something was leaving, and you have never once called that growth.
There was a stretch where you made nothing anybody could point at. You still call it a lost year. What you were actually doing was keeping a person from going under. Nobody put that on a form, so you never counted it.
That stretch is why you can hold what you hold now. It grew while the water was going out.
The shape is the evidence.
AquariusThen you go home to your own and it goes blank.
Hold it up. Every petal is packed with desert sand, caught while the crystals were spreading out through the damp ground.
It is soft enough to mark with a nail and water takes it apart. That is the part the shelf card skips.
Aquarius, you are built out of whatever was around you at the time, and you would rather nobody looked that closely.
You could lay out a friend's whole situation in four sentences and be right. Then you go home to your own and it goes blank. Being the one who understood things was how you got kept, back when needing anything was inconvenient.
So you write your own week up and never read it back. It is why you are tired in a way that sleeping does not touch.
Put it down somewhere dry and stop analysing it.
PiscesNobody ever came back to tell you that had ended.
Somebody named this a rose. It is a stack of soft crystal blades that grew in wet sand and shut around the grains.
Roses do not last and neither does this. Water softens the petals and the whole thing goes down, so it never gets washed.
Pisces, you formed in a dry season and one soft thing could still take you apart.
Other people feel a room and let it go behind them. You take the whole of it in and then spend the night working out which parts were yours. Somebody early on made their mood your job. Nobody ever came back to tell you that had ended.
So you get home carrying other people. Nothing is left for whoever waited up.
Some of that was never yours.

What tradition says
In crystal lore, desert rose is linked with clarity of purpose and with protective spirits, and each rosette is sometimes said to hold a guardian. That is a modern attribution.
Care
- Do not put this one in water. It dissolves or spalls. Dust it dry.
- Salt scratches it. Do not bury it in salt.
- Water is what destroys this one. It dissolves the gypsum and the rosette collapses. Never wash it. Never mist it. The petals snap off under almost no pressure. Set it somewhere safe and leave it alone.
Common questions
What does desert rose mean?
Desert Rose is carried for grounding, protection and calm. A shallow desert pool dried out. Tradition links it to the root, crown chakra.
Is desert rose real or fake?
Desert Rose is not faked often, but it is still worth checking. Try a fingernail first. If it scratches, you have a gypsum desert rose.
Can desert rose go in water?
No. Desert Rose dissolves or spalls in water. Dust it dry instead of soaking it, and keep it out of salt.
