Azurite

Azurite

Azurite forms at the top of a copper deposit, where water and air have been rotting the ore for a very long time. It is the most electric blue in the common mineral world and one of the least stable. It slowly turns green from the outside in, on its way to becoming malachite. Blue pieces with green patches are its signature, not damage. It is copper, so it is toxic. Never soak it, never grind it, never drink anything it sat in. Wash your hands after raw material. Something you have been not looking at has been getting louder for months. You know its exact shape. You have been calling it fine because naming it starts a conversation you are not ready for. So what is it?

People carry it for intuition, clarity and communication. Tradition attaches it to the element water, the third-eye, throat chakra, Venus. It is most often given to Sagittarius, Aquarius, Capricorn. It measures 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale.

What it is confused with

Lapis lazuli, sodalite, lazurite, dyed howlite, chrysocolla

Azurite is a deep, almost electric blue, darker and more violet than any other common blue mineral. It turns up as sharp flat or blocky crystals with a glassy, near diamond-bright shine, as velvety blue crusts, and as rounded nodules. Green malachite patches appear wherever it has altered, and a blue mass with green blooms is close to proof. Rubbed on a tile it leaves a pale blue streak. It is soft at 3.5 to 4 and brittle, and it is often mixed in with malachite in the same piece.

How to tell

Rub it on the back of an unglazed tile. Azurite leaves a pale blue streak. Lapis lazuli leaves a blue streak too, but lapis is harder at 5 to 6, and it carries gold pyrite specks and white calcite. Azurite is soft enough for a coin to scratch it. Then look for green patches. Azurite turns green where it has altered, and blue with green blooms is close to proof.

Azurite is sometimes soaked with resin to hold it together, which is fair enough on a mineral this soft. What to watch for is reconstituted azurite. Chips are set in resin and sold as azurite beads. The colour looks unnaturally even and you can usually see the binder between the fragments.

What it means

The moon is in Sagittarius today, so this is the Sagittarius read.

The other half cost you, and you never once said so out loud.

Azurite is copper carbonate, which is to say it is rotted copper ore that went blue. It is chemically almost the same thing as green malachite.

That also makes it toxic if it gets into you. No elixirs, no grinding, and wash your hands after handling a raw piece.

Sagittarius, the best thing in your life grew straight out of something falling apart, and you still call that year a waste.

You have gone anyway more times than you can count. Half of those were the best decisions of your life.

The other half cost you, and you never once said so out loud. Somebody told you at fifteen that you were reckless and you have been arguing with them ever since.

Take this one warning. Wash your hands.

Azurite for every sign

AriesSomebody clapped for you when you were fast and nobody clapped when you were steady.

Azurite grew at the top of a copper deposit, in the holes left behind while water and air rotted the ore. That rotting went on for a very long time.

It is still going. Azurite turns green from the outside in, on its way to becoming malachite, and the green patches are the process rather than damage.

Aries, you want the change to be over by Friday.

You have started a new life about four times. Each time the first fortnight felt incredible and then the ordinary part arrived.

Somebody clapped for you when you were fast and nobody clapped when you were steady. So steady started feeling like failing, and it has never stopped feeling like that.

The green edge took decades. It still counts.

TaurusYou still think about how easily you believed them.

Azurite is one of the least stable blues there is. Water gets at it, salt gets at it, daylight fades it.

It is also soft enough to scratch with a coin. The most electric colour in the ordinary mineral world is also the one that keeps least well.

Taurus, you learned to distrust anything that looked too good for the price.

There was a person who was lovely for six weeks. You still think about how easily you believed them.

Now you wait things out before you let yourself want them. People call that slow. It is closer to a bruise that never fully went.

Keep it out of the window. Some things you protect on purpose.

GeminiYou have talked your way out of rooms other people got stuck in.

Some azurite beads are not solid azurite. Crushed chips get set in resin and sold under the same name, with a colour too even to be real.

The tell is the evenness. Real azurite is patchy, with green creeping in where it has started turning to malachite.

Gemini, you got your best material out of your worst year and you still describe that year as boring.

You are quick. You have talked your way out of rooms other people got stuck in. That started as survival and turned into a habit.

The trouble is that the even version of you is the one everybody has. Nobody gets the patchy one, and the patchy one is the real colour.

Say the patchy version to somebody this week.

CancerYou held a house together through something bad and told everybody you were fine.

Hold it near a lamp and look at the edges. Where the blue has gone green, that is azurite turning into malachite, slowly, from the outside in.

It is copper. That means it is toxic if it gets inside you, so never soak it and never grind it. Wash your hands after handling a raw piece.

Cancer, you have been turning into somebody else from the outside in and only you can see the edge of it.

You held a house together through something bad and told everybody you were fine. You were not lying exactly. You had just stopped checking.

Somebody needed you to be steady when you were far too young for it. You have been steady ever since, and nobody has ever asked what it costs.

Wash your hands. Then put the phone down.

LeoYou have carried an entire evening on your own while feeling nothing much at all.

Azurite is copper. The blue is what copper ore looks like after water and air have been rotting it for ages.

Because it is copper, it is toxic if it gets into you. Never make anything to drink with it and never grind it dry.

Leo, the most beautiful thing about you came out of something going wrong.

You are the one who makes it fun. Nobody has ever seen you arrive tired. You have carried an entire evening on your own while feeling nothing much at all.

You learned that in a house where somebody else's mood ran the day. Being bright was not showing off. It was how you kept things safe.

Somebody should have made your evening fun.

VirgoYou were nine, and you decided that keeping things neat was your job.

Azurite is one of the least stable blues in the mineral world. Water gets at it, so does salt, so does daylight. None of that is reversible.

There is no fixing that. You keep it dry and dark, and the green still comes in from the edges over decades.

Virgo, you found the beautiful thing in the middle of the worst year and you still will not call that a skill.

You have sorted the cupboard, the inbox and the shelf. The thing you actually need to say has been sat there since spring. It would take you one sentence.

Somebody in your house came apart when things got messy. You were nine, and you decided that keeping things neat was your job.

Say the thing. The shelf will wait.

LibraYou could tell from a door closing how the night was going to go.

Azurite formed slowly in cavities near the top of a copper deposit. It took the rotting of a whole ore body to make a blue that bright.

And it will not keep it. The blue goes green from the edge in, and that is the stone doing exactly what it was always going to do.

Libra, something had to go bad in your house for you to get this good at reading a room.

You run the room before you answer. Who goes quiet, who sulks, who takes a no as a verdict on themselves.

You could tell from a door closing how the night was going to go. You were about eight. That is not a personality, that is training.

You are allowed to answer first and check later.

ScorpioYou turned yourself down for about two years.

Put it on unglazed tile and drag it. The streak it leaves is pale blue, and that is how you separate it from lapis.

It marks that easily because it is soft. A coin will scratch it, which is a strange thing to be true of the brightest blue in the room.

Scorpio, the most vivid thing about you is the least stable, and somebody made that your fault.

You turned yourself down for about two years. Quieter at dinners. Slower to say the true thing.

It did not work, because it was never about the volume. They wanted somebody easier, and you were never going to be that, and you should not have had to be.

You were not too much. They were not enough.

Azurite is copper carbonate, which is to say it is rotted copper ore that went blue. It is chemically almost the same thing as green malachite.

CapricornSomebody at home noticed you when you delivered and looked away when you did not.

Some azurite on the market is not whole. Crushed chips get bound in resin and sold as beads, with a colour too even to have grown that way.

It is still azurite in there. It is just no longer the piece that took ages to form in one cavity.

Capricorn, you have been holding yourself together with effort and calling it being fine.

The list in your head only records finished things. The three hours you spent fixing somebody else's problem do not appear on it.

Somebody at home noticed you when you delivered and looked away when you did not. You were young. You have been delivering ever since.

You are not the sum of what you handed in.

AquariusYou explained a friend's family to her once and she sat back in her chair.

Azurite survives fine in a dark drawer and badly everywhere else. Sunlight fades it, water attacks it, salt is worse.

Nothing about that is dramatic. It goes green from the edges in and becomes malachite, which is the whole ordinary end of the story.

Aquarius, you can be looked at or you can be well, and you learned young that you do not get both.

You explained a friend's family to her once and she sat back in her chair. You were right and it helped, and you did not even have to think about it.

Nobody has done that for you. You give off fine, and fine is the one signal people never check. You have never corrected it either.

Who is checking on you?

PiscesYou could always tell first, at home, before anybody said anything.

Azurite took a very long time to build in a rotting copper deposit. Then it started undoing itself almost as soon as it was finished.

The green creeping in from the edge is not damage. It is the stone becoming the next thing, which it cannot help.

Pisces, you are changing colour from the outside in and you have told nobody it is happening.

You come home from a room and cannot tell which parts of the mood were yours. By evening it is all one thing.

You could always tell first, at home, before anybody said anything. Everybody called that lovely, so nobody ever showed you how to close it off.

You can love people and still shut a door.

What tradition says

In crystal lore, azurite is kept for insight and inner vision, and it is sometimes called the stone of heaven. Edgar Cayce wrote about it, and his writings are what made it popular in the twentieth century American revival.

Care

  • Contains copper or heavy metals. Do not make elixirs. Wash your hands.
  • Do not put this one in water. It dissolves or spalls. Dust it dry.
  • Keep it out of direct sun. The colour goes and does not come back.
  • Salt scratches it. Do not bury it in salt.
  • Water, acid and salt all attack it. Keep all three away from it. Over decades in dry air it slowly alters into green malachite. That is a real chemical process, though normal storage is stable enough that you will probably never watch it happen. Keep it dry, dark and undisturbed. Dry brush only.

Azurite is a COPPER carbonate, chemically close to malachite. It is toxic if swallowed. It is soft and turns to powder easily, so dust is a real risk. NEVER make an elixir with it. Never soak it. Never grind it dry. Wash your hands after handling raw material.
