What it is

Deep forest-green translucent glass with a deeply and irregularly sculpted surface, natural moldavite is covered in a chaotic texture of pits, grooves, wormholes and lace-like etching produced by millions of years of soil corrosion, and no two pieces are alike. Held to a light it shows internal flow structure: swirling schlieren and thin worm-shaped lechatelierite (pure silica glass) inclusions, plus irregular flattened bubbles. Green is olive-to-bottle, never emerald, never uniform.
How to tell
The surface test does most of the work: real moldavite has deeply irregular natural etching, while fakes made from moulded green glass have smooth, glossy or shallowly-pitted surfaces, sometimes with mould seams and identical repeated texture. Under 10x look for worm-like lechatelierite streaks and irregular flattened bubbles; fakes show round bubbles and no schlieren. Density 2.32, 2.38 is lower than most bottle glass.
Genuine moldavite is untreated. It is among the most counterfeited materials in the trade, the great majority of cheap 'moldavite' online is moulded green glass, often from China or India. Price is a signal: real material is expensive per gram and rising as the Czech deposits close.
