Seraphinite
Clinochlore (chlorite group)
Seraphinite is softer than your own fingernail. A key or a dropped coin will scar it, and water gets into the layers and ruins it. It grew when hot fluids altered magnesium-rich rock deep underground. The silver feathers are crystals that fanned out as they formed. The angel name is young. It was made up for the trade, barely older than your parents. One deposit in Siberia is the only real source, and that part is true. You carry grief in the body. The shoulders. The jaw at four in the morning. People have held this one while they set some of that down. What are you still bracing for?
People carry it for calm, self-love and grief. Tradition attaches it to the element air, the heart, crown chakra, Neptune. It is most often given to Sagittarius, Pisces, Virgo. It measures 2-2.5 on the Mohs scale.

What it is confused with
Moss agate, nuummite, astrophyllite, chlorite in quartz, serpentine
A dark green body crossed by silvery-white feathered plumes that look like bird wings or frost on a window. The silver comes from chlorite fibres lying parallel, and it flashes and moves as you turn the stone. The plumes radiate and overlap in layered fans. It is very soft. A fingernail marks it and a coin gouges it. The polish is moderate and scuffs easily. It feels slightly greasy or soapy in the hand.
How to tell
Two things together identify it, silver feathering and how soft it is. Seraphinite is 2 to 2.5 on the hardness scale, so a fingernail marks it. Nuummite is the usual mix-up and it is much harder at 5.5 to 6, with straight golden-blue needles instead of feathery plumes. Moss agate is harder still at 6.5 to 7, and its inclusions are dark rather than silver.
Sometimes stabilised with resin, because the material is so soft. It is disclosed as normal practice and it helps a piece survive being handled.

How it forms
Seraphinite is clinochlore, a soft green mineral that grows when magnesium-rich rock is altered underground by heat and fluids, and the silver plumes are its crystals fanning out as they formed.

What it means
The moon is in Sagittarius today, so this is the Sagittarius read.
You have not said the name out loud in company since.
Somebody quarried this in eastern Siberia, cut it thin, and in some cases sealed it with resin so it would hold together on a shelf.
Underneath it is clinochlore, formed when heat and fluids altered magnesium-rich rock, with silver crystals fanning out through the green.
No treatment makes it hard. Keys scar it, other stones scar it, and water gets into the layers and will not come out.
Sagittarius, you kept moving so the loss would not have anywhere to land.
It never felt like avoidance to you, it felt like momentum, and momentum has genuinely carried you through things that flattened other people.
It is three years now. You have not said the name out loud in company since. That town is still a place you drive around.
It is still waiting. It is patient.
That is today's sky, not your chart. Add your birth details and this stone gets read against your own.

Seraphinite for every sign
AriesYou have never had a problem you could not outwork.
Seraphinite is softer than your fingernail. Keys scar it, a dropped coin marks it, and water works into the layers and ruins it for good.
It grew underground when heat and fluids altered magnesium-rich rock, and the silver feathers are its crystals fanning out as they formed.
The angel name is not ancient. It was invented for the trade last century, barely older than your parents.
Aries, you want to be finished with this, and it does not have a finish date.
You have never had a problem you could not outwork. This one is unfamiliar in a way that makes you furious, because there is nothing to charge at and nobody to beat.
So you keep asking how long it should take, as if somebody has the number. Nobody has the number.
Some things only get softer. Keep it in a pouch.
TaurusYou have not taken a full breath since Tuesday.
Seraphinite is clinochlore, and it made itself slowly. Heat and fluids worked on magnesium-rich rock deep underground until it became something else entirely.
The silver plumes are its own crystals fanning out as they grew. Nobody painted them on.
It is also one of the softest stones sold anywhere, and water gets into those layers and ruins it. Keep it dry and keep it alone in a pouch.
Taurus, you hold it in the body, and the body has been quietly paying for years.
The shoulders came first. Then the jaw at four in the morning. You have not taken a full breath since Tuesday.
Nobody taught you to say it out loud, so it goes somewhere else instead. People have held this one while they set some of that down.
Put your shoulders down. That is all for tonight.
GeminiThe person you are hardest on has been there for all of it.
The name means nothing. Seraphinite is clinochlore, a soft green mineral, and the angel word was invented for the trade.
It formed when heat and fluids altered magnesium-rich rock underground, and the silver feathers are its own crystals fanning out.
It is softer than a fingernail and water ruins the layers. Some pieces are stabilised with resin, because the material will not hold together.
Gemini, you are kinder to a stranger in a queue than to yourself in your own head.
Somebody used to narrate your mistakes back to you, out loud, and you learned the tone so well that you can still do it in their voice. You do it most nights.
The person you are hardest on has been there for all of it. You would never speak to a friend that way.
Catch yourself doing it once today.
CancerNobody has ever asked whether you wanted the job, including you.
Somebody cut this out of one deposit in eastern Siberia, effectively the only place it comes from, then polished it and sealed it with resin.
The stone grew when heat and fluids altered magnesium-rich rock, and those silver feathers are its crystals fanning out as they formed.
It stays soft whatever anyone does. Keys scratch it and water gets into the layers, so keep it dry and away from your other stones.
Cancer, you started mothering people at about nine and nobody has relieved you since.
There was a reason. Somebody in the house could not do it, so you filled in, and it worked well enough to become who you were to everybody.
You are grown and still the one who checks. Nobody has ever asked whether you wanted the job, including you.
What would you be if you put it down?
LeoYou have a place you go to fall apart for four minutes.
Hold it under a light and the feathers move. Those silver plumes are crystals that fanned out as the stone formed, not a coating.
It grew when heat and fluids worked on magnesium-rich rock underground, in one Siberian deposit and effectively nowhere else.
It is very soft. A key in the same pocket will scar it, and water works into the layers and does not leave.
Leo, you cried in a car park once and then went back in and did the rest of the day.
That is the whole pattern. You have a place you go to fall apart for four minutes. There is a face you put back on before anyone notices.
It started because somebody needed you steady far too young. You got so good at the reassembly that people think nothing much reaches you.
Things reach you. You just do it in car parks.
VirgoYou have not reached the end of that list since you were about nineteen.
This stone survives almost nothing. It is softer than a fingernail, other stones scratch it, and water gets into the layers and ruins it.
It formed underground when heat and fluids altered magnesium-rich rock, and the silver plumes are its crystals fanning out as they grew.
Because it is so soft, some of it is stabilised with resin. Keep yours alone in a soft pouch and dry-wipe it.
Virgo, you look after everybody and then need somebody to hold you together at the end of it.
Somebody in your house rested and somebody in your house did not, and you learned very early which one got spoken about kindly.
So there is always one more thing before you are allowed to stop. You have not reached the end of that list since you were about nineteen.
The list will still be there. Sit down.
LibraYou have been managing everybody else's comfort about your own loss.
Seraphinite took a long time and a lot of heat. Fluids moved through magnesium-rich rock and slowly turned it into something new.
The silver feathering is its own crystals fanning out as they formed. That happened at a pace nobody could hurry.
The name is much younger. Somebody attached an angel word to it last century because it sold, and it is soft enough that water alone will ruin it.
Libra, you apologised for being sad past the point other people found it convenient.
Somewhere around week three you noticed the faces changing. So you started giving the shorter answer, then the cheerful one, then nothing at all.
You have been managing everybody else's comfort about your own loss. That is a strange thing to have been doing alone.
You are not running late on anything.
ScorpioSomebody saw you at your lowest once and treated it as information.
Take the name off it and this is clinochlore, a soft green chlorite mineral out of one Siberian deposit.
It formed when heat and fluids altered magnesium-rich rock, and the silver plumes are its crystals fanning out as they grew.
The angel word was added by the trade last century. What is actually true is that it is softer than your fingernail and water ruins it.
Scorpio, you will do this alone rather than be watched doing it.
Somebody saw you at your lowest once and treated it as information. You did not make a scene. You decided, permanently, that nobody would get that again.
So you handle it at night, in your own house, and everybody gets the working version in the morning. It is costing you more than the original thing did.
One person. Not everyone. One.

CapricornSomewhere in the carrying on you went quiet inside.
Look at the plumes. They fan out like feathers because that is how the crystals grew, spreading as heat and fluids altered the rock around them.
That happened underground, slowly, in one deposit in Siberia that is effectively the world's only source.
It is extremely soft. A coin will scar it and water gets into the layers, so keep it dry and out of the dish with the others.
Capricorn, you are functioning perfectly and there is nothing behind your eyes.
Everything gets done. Bills, emails, birthday cards on time. None of it reaches you.
You were taught that carrying on is what a decent person does, so you carried on. Somewhere in the carrying on you went quiet inside.
Functioning is not the same as being all right.
AquariusYou cannot let yourself be soothed by something you cannot defend in an argument.
It does not last. Softer than a fingernail, scarred by keys and coins, and water works into the layers and finishes it.
It grew when heat and fluids altered magnesium-rich rock deep underground, and the silver feathers are its own crystals fanning out.
The angel name was invented for the trade about forty years ago. The Siberian source is real. Both of those are allowed to be true at once.
Aquarius, you called all of this nonsense and you still wanted the comfort.
That is not hypocrisy. You were raised somewhere feelings had to be justified first, so you learned to check a thing was rational before letting yourself have it.
Now there is a rule. You cannot let yourself be soothed by something you cannot defend in an argument.
Nobody is going to ask you to prove it.
PiscesYou have never worked out how to feel it without taking some of it home.
Long before anybody named it, hot fluids were moving through magnesium-rich rock underground and slowly turning it green.
The silver plumes are the crystals fanning out as they formed. It took as long as it took.
It is barely harder than a fingernail and water gets into the layers and wrecks it, so keep it dry and away from your other stones.
Pisces, you are holding grief that was never handed to you.
You feel what a room is carrying before anybody says anything. You have never worked out how to feel it without taking some of it home.
So there are sadnesses in you that belong to your mother, or a friend, or a stranger on a bus. Yours is in there too, near the bottom, waiting.
Which of it is actually yours?

In crystal lore, seraphinite is kept for angelic contact and for letting go of what the body is holding. The name and both attributions date from the stone's commercial introduction in the late twentieth century.
Care
- Do not put this one in water. It dissolves or spalls. Dust it dry.
- Salt scratches it. Do not bury it in salt.
- Keys and coins and other stones will all scratch it, because this is one of the softest polished stones sold. Water works into the layers as well, and salt does the same. Keep it on its own in a soft pouch and dry-wipe it only.
