Alexandrite

Chrysoberyl, the chromium bearing colour change variety

Alexandrite should not exist. Beryllium collects in granite pegmatites, near the top of the crust. Chromium belongs to ultramafic rock that came from much deeper. The two elements live in different worlds and almost never meet, so the only place chromium bearing chrysoberyl forms is the narrow seam where a beryllium rich fluid pushes into chromium bearing rock and reacts with it.

The colour change comes from that chromium sitting where aluminium should be. It absorbs hard across the yellow band of the spectrum, roughly 520 to 620 nanometres, and leaves two windows open, one in the blue green and one in the red. Daylight is rich in blue, so the green window wins. A filament bulb is rich in red, so the red window wins. The stone is not doing anything different. The light supply changed.

It was found in the Ural Mountains by the Finnish mineralogist Nils Nordenskiold and named for Alexander II of Russia. That Russian material is mostly gone. Brazil, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and India produce it now, and even there a clean stone above three carats is a serious rarity.

So here is what the shop skips. Almost every alexandrite you can actually afford was grown by people. Pulled by the Czochralski method, or grown in flux, or hydrothermally, and it is real chrysoberyl with a real colour change, often a stronger one than the mined stones because the chromium can be dialled in. That is a factory product, not a fake, and it is only dishonest when nobody says it.

The cheaper lie is different. Much of what is sold as alexandrite is not chrysoberyl at all. It is synthetic corundum with vanadium in it, and it has been sold under the name for over a century. It shifts from a greyish blue to a mauve purple, and it never goes green. If there is no green, it is not alexandrite.

Somebody caught you being one person at work and another at home, and used the word fake. You were young enough, or tired enough, to accept the charge. Since then you have been trying to hold one colour steady in every room, and it has cost you more than it saved, because the effort shows and people read it as strain.

It is not two stones. It is one stone and two lights.

People carry it for transformation, intuition and shadow work. Tradition attaches it to the element air, the heart, crown chakra, Mercury. It is most often given to Gemini, Scorpio, Cancer. It measures 8.5 on the Mohs scale.

Arcane

Common·Uncommon·Rare·Arcane

The name is honest. What is under it usually is not. Most stones tagged alexandrite in ordinary jewellery are either laboratory grown chrysoberyl, which is the same material, or colour change synthetic corundum, which is a different mineral entirely and has been passed off under the name since the early twentieth century.

What it is confused with

Garnet, colour change synthetic corundum, synthetic chrysoberyl, colour change spinel

Look at it in two different lights, because that is the whole identification. In daylight it reads bluish green or a slightly muddy green, and under a warm filament bulb it swings to purplish red or raspberry. Turn a faceted stone slowly and you should catch three separate colours down three directions, red, yellow orange and green, because chrysoberyl is strongly trichroic. Stones above about three carats are very rare, so a large clean one with a dramatic change and a comfortable price came out of a laboratory.

How to tell

Take the stone outside into daylight, then bring it under a warm filament or halogen bulb, and watch what happens. Real alexandrite goes from a bluish or slightly muddy green to a purplish red or raspberry. The common imposter, colour change synthetic corundum, goes from a greyish blue to a mauve purple and never shows green at all. One warning that ruins most home tests, an LED bulb does not put out enough red light to make the change work, so use a real filament bulb, a halogen lamp or candlelight.

The issue with alexandrite is not treatment, it is origin. Natural alexandrite is one of the genuinely rare gems on earth, and the Russian material that made its reputation is largely worked out, so nearly everything on the affordable market was made rather than mined. Laboratory grown chrysoberyl is produced by the Czochralski pulling method, by flux growth and hydrothermally. It is the same mineral with the same colour change, often a cleaner and stronger change than mined stones show, and Czochralski material tends to give itself away with curved growth lines and unusual clarity while flux grown material is much harder to separate because its inclusions look natural. Separately, and more commonly, colour change synthetic corundum containing vanadium is sold as alexandrite. That is a different species and a different change, greyish blue to mauve purple with no green in it. Assume laboratory grown unless there is a report from a gemmological laboratory, and treat any large, clean, cheap stone with a dramatic change as grown.

How it forms

It forms only where beryllium rich fluid from a granite pegmatite pushes into chromium bearing rock such as an ultramafic body or a mica schist, which is rare because beryllium and chromium normally belong to completely different kinds of rock.

Where it comes from

the Ural Mountains in Russia, Hematita in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Andhra Pradesh in India, Madagascar

What it means

The moon is in Sagittarius today, so this is the Sagittarius read.

The stone is the same stone in every country.

Hematita in Brazil, then Sri Lanka, then Tanzania and India. The Urals largely finished, and the stone kept turning up somewhere else because the geology that makes it is a coincidence, not a place.

Same conditions, different continent. That is the only rule it follows.

Sagittarius, you go where the light is different, and it is not restlessness for its own sake. Somewhere early you were told exactly who you were by people who had only ever seen you in one room, and you left to find out whether they were right.

The stone is the same stone in every country. So are you.

That is today's sky, not your chart. Add your birth details and this stone gets read against your own.

You know what this one would do for you. You just don't have it.

Alexandrite for every sign

AriesA position you cannot revisit is not a position.

Almost no alexandrite you can buy came out of the ground. The Russian deposit that made its name is mostly worked out, and what is left is priced beyond most people.

So the trade grows it. Pulled from a melt, or grown in flux, and the colour change often comes out stronger than the mined stones manage.

Aries, you decide who you are and then defend it, and the defending started early. Somebody kept changing the terms on you when you were small, so you planted a flag and refused to move it, and that flag has been in the same soil for years now.

A position you cannot revisit is not a position. It is a wall.

TaurusThe stone did not become unreliable. It got more information.

Beryllium sits in granite pegmatite near the top of the crust. Chromium comes from rock that formed much deeper. They do not usually meet, which is why this stone is rare rather than merely pretty.

Where they do meet, in a narrow reaction seam, you get a crystal that behaves like two different gems depending on the light.

Taurus, you were taught that changing your mind was a moral failure. Somebody in your family used consistency as proof of character, and inconsistency as proof of weakness, and you were young enough to take it as physics.

The stone did not become unreliable. It got more information.

GeminiOne stone. Two lights. That was always the arrangement.

The chromium in this crystal absorbs a hard band across the yellow part of the spectrum and leaves two windows, one in the blue green and one in the red. Daylight is rich in blue. A filament bulb is rich in red. Whichever window has more to work with, wins.

The stone is not switching. It is being lit differently.

Gemini, somebody called you fake for being different in two rooms, and it landed because they said it in front of people. You were not being two people. You were being accurate about two rooms, which nobody explained to you at the time.

One stone. Two lights. That was always the arrangement.

CancerBoth voices are yours. Only one has been fed.

The Urals gave up the first alexandrite and then, more or less, stopped. What comes out of Brazil and Sri Lanka and Tanzania now is real, and a clean stone over three carats is still an event.

Rarity here is not marketing. It is two elements that live in different rocks having to find each other.

Cancer, you have a room voice and a home voice, and the gap between them is wider than you would like anyone to know. That gap has a source. Somewhere early it was not safe to bring the home voice out of the house.

Both voices are yours. Only one of them has been fed.

LeoThe other colour was never a failure of the first.

The old trade line is emerald by day, ruby by night. It is a sales phrase and it oversells both ends, since the green is usually a little muddy and the red usually leans purple.

What is true underneath the phrase is stranger than the phrase. One crystal, two colours, and nothing changing except the lamp.

Leo, you were rewarded for one of your colours and only one. Somebody made a great deal of noise about the bright version of you and went flat when you were quiet, and a child reads that as instruction rather than as preference.

The other colour was never a failure of the first.

VirgoThe stone was fine. The equipment was wrong.

Here is the test people get wrong. They take a suspect alexandrite into a room and switch on an LED bulb, and nothing happens, and they decide the stone is fake.

LEDs do not put out enough red light for the change to show at all. Use a filament bulb, a halogen lamp or a candle. The stone was fine. The equipment was wrong.

Virgo, you check yourself against a standard, and you never chose that standard. It came from somebody who measured you in a way that suited them, and you kept the ruler after they left the room.

How much of what you call a flaw was measured under the wrong lamp?

LibraNo green, not alexandrite.

Most of what gets sold as alexandrite is not chrysoberyl at all. It is synthetic corundum with vanadium in it, and it has carried the name for over a hundred years.

You can catch it without a laboratory. It moves from a greyish blue to a mauve purple and it never once goes green. No green, not alexandrite.

Libra, you got very good at being the version that causes the least friction, and that skill was bought. A house where disagreement turned into something worse teaches a child to sand their edges down before anybody can complain about them.

Smooth is not the same as true.

ScorpioSomebody looking properly would have to move around you.

Chrysoberyl is strongly trichroic. Look down three different directions through a cut stone and you get three colours, red, yellow orange and green, all of them in there at once.

That is separate from the colour change. The change is about the lamp. The trichroism is about which way you are looking through the crystal.

Scorpio, you keep the third colour to yourself, and you have a reason. You showed somebody all three once, they picked the one they liked and started treating the others as a problem, and you filed the lesson permanently.

Somebody looking properly would have to move around you. Very few people bother.

SagittariusThe stone is the same stone in every country.

So are you.

CapricornScarcity is not something you have to earn twice.

A clean natural alexandrite over three carats is genuinely rare. Not marketing rare. Rare because the two elements it needs come from different kinds of rock and hardly ever end up in the same place.

Most of the market solves that by growing it. Real chrysoberyl, real colour change, made in weeks instead of found.

Capricorn, you learned that being rare only counted if it was also useful. Something at home ran on your output, so anything about you that did not produce got quietly reclassified as a hobby.

Scarcity is not something you have to earn twice.

AquariusGrown is not fake. Unmentioned is.

Laboratory grown alexandrite is real chrysoberyl. Same formula, same structure, same chromium doing the same work across the yellow band of the spectrum. The pulled stones give themselves away with curved growth lines and a suspicious lack of anything wrong inside them.

Grown is not fake. Unmentioned is, and the tag almost never mentions it.

Aquarius, you would rather be called grown than pass as found, and that came from watching somebody you respected get caught pretending. It went in deep and it never came out.

Would you still choose the honest label if it cost you the room?

PiscesYou are not inconsistent. You are lit by whatever you stand in.

Take this stone from a window to a lamp and it changes in front of you. Nothing about the crystal moved. What changed was what was available to it.

People find that unsettling in a mineral. They find it far more unsettling in a person, and they usually say so.

Pisces, you have been told your feelings are unreliable because they change, and whoever said it was describing their own discomfort, not your character. You were probably a child at the time, and you took it as a diagnosis.

You are not inconsistent. You are lit by whatever you are standing in.

What tradition says

The trade line for it is emerald by day, ruby by night, which is a sales phrase rather than a description of either mineral. It is named after Alexander II of Russia and carried a strong association with the Russian imperial court, and green and red happened to be the Russian military colours, which is one reason the story travelled. Modern birthstone lists give it to June alongside pearl and moonstone. In crystal lore it is kept for adapting without losing yourself. Lore, not medicine.

Care

  • Water is fine. Dry it afterwards.
  • Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. At 8.5 it is hard and it is not bothered by water, salt or daylight, so the ordinary crystal care warnings do not apply. Knocks are the real risk, since chrysoberyl has distinct cleavage and a hard enough blow on the wrong plane can split it. Keep it out of ultrasonic cleaners if the stone is included or has been repaired.

Chrysoberyl is a beryllium mineral. A finished, polished stone is inert and safe to wear and handle. The hazard is beryllium containing dust, which is dangerous to breathe, so this is not a stone to cut, grind or sand at home without proper wet working and extraction. Buy it finished and there is nothing to manage.

Common questions

What does alexandrite mean?

Alexandrite is carried for transformation, intuition and shadow work. Alexandrite should not exist. Tradition links it to the heart, crown chakra.

Is alexandrite real or fake?

The name is honest. What is under it usually is not. Take the stone outside into daylight, then bring it under a warm filament or halogen bulb, and watch what happens. Real alexandrite goes from a bluish or slightly muddy green to a purplish red or raspberry. The issue with alexandrite is not treatment, it is origin.

Can alexandrite go in water?

A short rinse is fine for alexandrite, then dry it.
