Chrome Diopside
Diopside, chromium-bearing gem variety
Most of this mineral never gets anywhere near the surface. Diopside belongs to the dense rock under the crust, and it stays there. The chrome-green gem material only reaches daylight because a kimberlite pipe tore a hole upward and carried it, in the same rush of rock that carries diamonds.
That is how prospectors used it for decades. Green grains in the gravel meant a diamond pipe was close. The stone was a signpost long before anybody thought to cut it.
Here is the part the shop usually skips, and for once it is good news. Chrome diopside is not heated. Not irradiated, not dyed, not oiled, not fracture filled. Nearly everything else on that shelf has been through something. The emerald was oiled. The blue topaz sat in a reactor. The ruby went in a furnace. This one came up green and stayed green.
It is cheap anyway, and the reason for that is honest too. It sits at about 5.5 on the hardness scale and it splits in two directions, so it scuffs and chips if you wear it on your hand every day. Past roughly two carats the green shuts down and goes near black. The trade prices it for what it cannot survive, not for what was done to it.
Somebody early on found the soft part of you and handled it badly, and you decided the safest move was to say it first. So you lead with the flaw now. You warn people. You get the disclosure out before anyone else can use it, and you call that honesty, and some of it is. The rest of it is a door you shut before anyone gets close enough to try it.
Nothing was done to this stone to make it easier to sell. Somebody just stopped putting it where it would get hit.
People carry it for grief, love and calm. Tradition attaches it to the element earth, the heart chakra, Venus. It is most often given to Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. It measures 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.

Common·Uncommon·Rare·Arcane
Chrome diopside is an honest name. The dishonest one is Siberian emerald, still used by some sellers. It is not emerald and it is not beryl. It is diopside coloured by chromium, softer than emerald and worth a small fraction of it.
What it is confused with
Emerald, peridot, green aventurine, green tourmaline, tsavorite garnet, dioptase, green glass
Look for a warm grass green with a yellow cast in it, never the cool blue-green of emerald. Size is the giveaway. Small stones are bright and open, and anything much over two carats closes up and reads almost black in the middle. Under a loupe you tend to see fine straight lines and small dark specks rather than bubbles, and the sharp corners of a cut stone often show tiny chips because the material is soft.
How to tell
Put it under a 10x loupe and hunt for round bubbles. Green glass, which is what most cheap imitations are, holds them, often with a swirl running one way. Chrome diopside shows fine straight lines and small dark crystal specks instead. Then check colour against size. A real one goes dark and closed above about two carats, so a large stone that stays bright open green is probably not diopside at all. Its green also leans yellow, never blue.
This is one of the very few coloured gems sold with nothing done to it. No heat, no irradiation, no dye, no oil, no fracture filling. That is genuinely unusual and it is worth knowing, because the emerald, ruby, sapphire, topaz and most of the tourmaline on the same shelf have all been through something. The reason is practical rather than noble. The colour is already strong and the material is cheap enough that improving it would cost more than it adds. What holds the price down instead is hardness of 5.5 to 6 with two cleavage directions, so it scratches and chips in a ring, and colour that darkens to near black much above two carats.

What it means
The moon is in Sagittarius today, so this is the Sagittarius read.
Nobody improved this one. It was allowed to be enough.
Emerald gets oiled. Ruby gets heated. Blue topaz goes in a reactor. Chrome diopside gets cut and sold.
It is one of the very few coloured gems that reaches a shop with nothing to declare. The reason is not virtue. The colour is already good and the stone is too cheap for anyone to spend money improving it.
Sagittarius, somebody made staying feel like losing, so you got very good at the next place. New country, new plan, new people who have never met the old version of you. The freedom is real. So is the thing that made you need it.
Nobody improved this one. It was allowed to be enough.

Chrome Diopside for every sign
AriesYou were the sign the diamond was near.
Chrome diopside rides up from the mantle inside kimberlite, the same rock that carries diamonds. Prospectors hunt the green grains because they mean a diamond pipe is close.
Almost nothing is done to it. No heat, no irradiation, no dye. The green is chromium that sat in the crystal long before anyone dug for it. The trade marks it down anyway, because it scratches easily and it darkens to near black at any real size.
Aries, you decided somewhere back there that being first was how you earned your place. A room went quiet on you once and you read that as slowness, so you started arriving early and loud. You call it drive. Some of it is drive.
You were the sign the diamond was near. Being the marker was never the smaller job.
TaurusEasy to damage and easy to fool are not the same thing.
This stone is soft. About 5.5 on the hardness scale, with two cleavage planes running through it, so it chips if you knock it against a door frame.
That softness is why it stays cheap, not any treatment. Chrome diopside is one of the few green gems nobody bothers to cook or dye. Emerald gets oiled. This does not. It is simply priced for what it cannot survive.
Somebody once mistook your steadiness for a lack of feeling, Taurus, and you let them, because correcting it would have meant showing the feeling. So you built a life that looks unbothered from outside. The people who get close find out otherwise, and they are usually surprised.
Easy to damage and easy to fool are not the same thing.
GeminiIts worth was always tied up in what it pointed at.
A green grain turns up in a pan of gravel in Yakutia and the whole crew changes its plans. Not because the grain is worth much. Because of what it says about what is underneath.
Chrome diopside is an indicator mineral. It arrives at the counter untreated, uncooked and undyed, which is rare in this trade, and it still sells for very little. Its worth was always tied up in what it pointed at.
Gemini, you learned to be interesting because somebody stopped listening when you were only honest. Quickness kept the room. Now you can talk for an hour and walk out having said nothing you actually meant.
What would you point at, if being the point was allowed?
CancerUntreated is not the same as untouched.
Here is what did not happen to this stone. No furnace. No radiation chamber. No dye bath. The green came out of the ground already finished.
That is unusual. Most coloured stones on a shop shelf have been through something. Chrome diopside forms in mantle rock and in skarn, gets cut, and goes straight to sale. The only thing the trade does to it is discount it for being soft.
You went through something, Cancer. Somebody needed you to be older than you were and you obliged, and the part of you that should have been looked after learned to do the looking after instead. You are still doing it, and nobody has thought to stop you.
Untreated is not the same as untouched. This one got to keep its own colour, and that was luck rather than virtue.
LeoIt holds its light at a size you would call too small.
You will notice it looks best small. Cut chrome diopside above two or three carats and the green closes up and goes almost black in the middle.
That is not a flaw a jeweller can fix and nobody tries. The gem is left alone, no heat and no irradiation, because the chromium already does the work. The trade simply cuts it shallow and keeps it modest.
Leo, somebody applauded you at the wrong moment once, for the wrong thing, and you have been measuring the size of every room since. Bigger stage, better proof. It has cost you the small rooms, which are the ones where people actually knew you.
This one holds its light at a size you would call too small to bother with.
VirgoA clean split is what an honest thing does under hard hands.
Diopside grows in skarn, the ground where hot granite meets limestone and remakes it. The chromium-bearing kind comes from deeper still, out of the dense rock that does not usually reach the surface at all.
It arrives at the counter with no correction attached. Untreated, undyed, unheated. What it does carry is two directions of cleavage, which means one hard knock and it splits clean.
Virgo, somebody rewarded you for catching the mistake before it got found, and you built yourself around that reward. You have been the one who checks ever since. It is why you are trusted and it is also why you never get to put it down.
A clean split is not carelessness. It is what an honest thing does under hard hands.
LibraThe ground shuts for most of the year and the work waits.
The Inagli deposit sits west of Aldan in Yakutia and freezes for most of the year. The work happens in a short window, then the ground shuts and everyone waits.
What comes out is not adjusted. Chrome diopside is sold as it grew, which almost no green gem can claim. It costs little regardless, because it is soft, and because the market decided long ago that cheap and honest can sit together.
Libra, you were praised for keeping the peace at an age when you should have been allowed to be difficult. So you learned to read the room before you read yourself. By the time you know what you want, the moment has usually closed.
Was the peace ever actually yours to keep?
ScorpioNothing was done to this stone. People still assume something was.
Chrome diopside is calcium magnesium silicate with chromium in it. That is the whole reason for the green. No other explanation is needed and none is offered.
There is no treatment to disclose here, which is unusual enough to be worth saying out loud. What there is instead is a soft stone with cleavage, sold cheap, bought by people who assume cheap must mean faked.
Scorpio, somebody found out something true about you once and used it, and you decided the fix was to give people less. Now you test first and let people in second, and some of the good ones fail the test on purpose, because they can feel it running.
Nothing was done to this stone. People still assume something was.
SagittariusNobody improved this one. It was allowed to be enough.

CapricornThe stone did not get stronger. It got put somewhere safer.
You would probably not put this in a ring, and you would be right. It scratches at 5.5 and daily wear will dull the polish inside a year.
So it goes into earrings and pendants, where nothing hits it. Untreated, unheated, no dye, no filler. The trade did not toughen it or soften it. It found the setting where a soft thing survives.
Capricorn, you were handed responsibility before you had any say in it, and you carried it well enough that nobody ever offered to take it back. That is the whole trap. Being good at it is exactly what keeps getting you more of it.
The stone did not get stronger. Somebody just stopped putting it where it would be hit.
AquariusA green nobody was told to want.
Chrome diopside comes out of ultramafic rock, the dense deep material that makes up most of the mantle and almost none of the ground you walk on. It surfaces only where the earth has torn open.
It reaches shops in its original state, which is close to unheard of now. No furnace, no colour chamber. The market discounts it anyway, partly for softness and partly because it is not one of the four gem names everybody knows.
Aquarius, you were the odd one in a room that did not punish it so much as fail to notice, and going unnoticed shaped you harder than mockery would have. So you made the strangeness deliberate. At least chosen difference gets seen.
It was never a lesser green. It was a green nobody was told to want.
PiscesYou picked it out of the gravel yourself.
Green grains in grey gravel, hundreds of miles from anywhere, in a place that is frozen most of the year. Somebody kneels down and picks one out by hand.
It goes to the cutter untouched and leaves it exactly the colour it arrived in. In crystal lore diopside is kept for grief and for the slow reopening of a shut heart, though the stone itself is only chromium sitting in a silicate.
Pisces, you learned to feel other people first because feeling yourself first was not safe in that house. Now you can read what a room needs before anyone speaks and you still cannot name what you need. That is a skill built directly on a wound.
You picked it out of the gravel. That was you, not luck.

What tradition says
This is a newcomer, so no old tradition attaches to it. Gem material from the Inagli deposit in Yakutia only reached wide sale in the 1980s. In modern crystal writing it is placed at the heart and kept for grief and for the slow reopening of a closed heart, borrowing what green stones are usually given. Historical texts on diopside are thin and none of them are about the Siberian chrome material.
Care
- Water is fine. Dry it afterwards.
- Warm water and mild soap are fine, with a soft brush behind the setting. The real hazard is a knock. It splits along two cleavage directions and it is soft enough to scuff on a keyring, so keep it out of ultrasonic cleaners and steamers and store it away from harder stones.
