Amazonite

Amazonite was the last thing in the rock to harden. The granite around it cooled for ages, and this grew in the final pocket of melt, slow and unwatched.

Nobody dyed that green. It came from a trace of lead locked in the crystal, and the sellers who dye the pale stuff leave the colour sitting in the cracks.

Aries, you say the true thing out loud and then spend the night deciding you should not have.

Somebody praised you early for being fast. For being the one who moved while the rest of the room was still talking.

So now you measure a day by how much of it looked like motion. The long flat stretch where nothing shows is the part you keep abandoning, and you call that a fault in your character.

The colour arrived at the end.

The green in amazonite is lead. Not dye and not glaze, just a trace of lead that got locked into the feldspar while it cooled.

Polished and in your hand it is fine. In a glass of water it is not, and the shop selling it for elixirs has never read the study.

Taurus, you are steady company right up to the point somebody wants a piece of you to take away.

Somebody sold you something once. You believed the story, you paid for it, and then you found out what it actually was.

The worst part was not the money. It was standing there feeling stupid. So now you check everything twice and let people think you are slow.

You would rather be slow than be that person in that room again.

Hold it under a lamp and turn it once. Amazonite throws flat mirror flashes where it cleaves, and straight white streaks run through the green like plaid.

Turquoise never does that. Four seconds and a lamp and you know whether the thing in your hand matches its label.

Gemini, the thing that makes you interesting is also the thing you would rather nobody looked up.

It started as a kindness. You worked out young that the true short answer made a room go quiet.

So you learned to make it funnier and longer and easier to hear. Now nobody asks you the short one. You hand people the good version and drive home with the real one in your mouth.

What happens if you say the short answer once?

Amazonite survives being cut, drilled and polished. It is harder than a steel blade and it will hold a shine in a ring worn every day for years.

A sunny sill is what ruins it. Leave it in a bright window and the green pales out slowly, and it does not come back.

Cancer, you have been cut into and you still turn up shining, so everyone decided you were fine.

You can handle a crisis. You are the one people ring at two in the morning, and you are good at it, and everybody knows.

It is the ordinary Tuesdays that thin you out. The small unreturned things. The years of being the reliable one in a house that never asked how you were, because you never gave them a reason to.

Move it off the sill tonight.

Pale amazonite does not sell, so somebody dyes it. The deep even green in the case is often colour sitting in a stone that grew out shy.

The cracks give it away. Dye pools darker down in the fractures, and the stone left alone keeps its straight white streaks instead.

Leo, you turned the volume up because the quiet version of you was not getting picked.

You know within a minute who is upset and who is being left out. You know who needs you to be bigger so the evening works.

Nobody taught you to check on yourself with that accuracy. Somewhere back there you decided that being needed was the safer version of being loved. You have run on that ever since.

The split was there from the beginning. It still got made into something.

Put it beside real turquoise in daylight. The turquoise looks matte and waxy, with veins wandering through it.

The amazonite flashes back at you. Flat little mirrors where the crystal breaks clean, and pale stripes running dead straight that no dye can fake.

Libra, you keep making yourself the easier option so nobody has to choose out loud.

There is a version of the answer that would end the whole argument in four words. You have had it ready for months.

You do not say it because you can already see who it lands on. Somebody once made you responsible for how a whole house felt. You were far too young for that job, and you never got to put it down.

Whose face are you still managing?

The green is lead. That is the plain fact of amazonite, and it does not go on the little card in the shop.

Solid and polished in your hand, it is safe. Ground into water it is not, which is why nobody honest sells this one as something to drink.

Scorpio, a remark got locked into you young and it has been colouring everything since.

Someone said it kindly once, which is exactly why it stuck. That you were intense. That you took things too seriously.

You learned to check every real feeling before you let it out. The people who could take you at full strength were there the whole time. You just stopped testing for them.

The lead is the reason the colour is there at all.

Amazonite takes heat, water and a polishing wheel without complaint. It is harder than a steel knife and it holds up on a hand that never comes off.

One bad drop ends it. The cleavage runs flat and straight inside, so it does not chip like other stones, it splits.

Sagittarius, the thing that makes you the colour you are is also the thing you keep quiet about.

Somebody at home was frightened of everything. You watched what that fear did to a whole life, and you swore it would never be yours.

So now caution feels like a cage even when it is only a seatbelt. You are not reckless. You are running from a specific person you loved and did not want to become.

The pale material does not move off a shelf, so somebody dyes it. A deep even green fetches more than a shy one, and that is the whole reason.

Dye tells on itself in the cracks, where it sits darker than the rest. The untouched stone keeps straight white streaks running through it instead.

Capricorn, you have been making yourself an easier version to deal with since about fourteen.

If a day did not produce something you can point at, you write it off. The night you spent talking somebody down does not count. Neither does the year you held a house together.

You learned young that you would be kept around for what you carried. So you carry. You have never risked finding out if anyone would stay for the rest of you.

Someone already did. You were too busy to notice.

This one hardened last. The granite cooled around it first, and amazonite grew in the leftover pocket, out of what the rest of the rock did not use.

It has been mistaken for something else ever since. It gets sold as turquoise, as jade, as larimar, by people who never looked for the streaks.

Aquarius, you have been called the wrong thing so often that you stopped correcting anybody.

You will explain somebody else's family to them with total accuracy. You will spot the thing going on at the table before the starters arrive.

Then you go home and cannot say what you needed all evening. Being the one who watches was safer than being one of them, and you picked it so early that it stopped feeling like a choice.

You were allowed to want something. Nobody told you.

Turn it under a lamp and it flashes at you. Flat mirrors inside where the crystal splits clean, and pale stripes running straight through the green.

Leave it in a sunny window for a year and the green goes. Nothing dramatic happens. It just quietly stops being that colour.

Pisces, the thing that colours you was put in early and nobody ever offered to take it back out.

You walk into a room and take on whatever was already in it. Someone else's bad afternoon arrives in your chest and you cannot tell which parts are yours.

Nobody taught you where you end. As a child you were the one who kept the peace by feeling it first, and that was useful to somebody. It was never good for you.
