Rose Quartz

This is ordinary quartz with microscopic pink fibres trapped inside it. That is the whole trick, and it is a good one.

The love stone name is about a hundred years old and was picked for the colour. The pink is real. The story was sold on top of it.

Aries, you go at love the way you go at everything and it does not survive that speed.

You were quick, and quick got noticed. Somewhere in there you decided that if a thing takes effort you must be doing it wrong.

So you go looking for a fresh start and the old one sits in a box. It is not a lack of grit. Nobody ever told you the boring stretch was the part that counts.

This grew in the last watery part of a cooling granite. Slowly.

It takes water and salt and knocks. At seven on the hardness scale it scratches glass and shrugs off a pocket.

Sunlight is the one thing that beats it. Weeks on a bright sill and the pink washes out, and it does not come back.

The genuine one is pale, a bit cloudy, and unimpressive next to the fake. Look into a drill hole and dyed stone shows its pink pooled in the cracks.

Cancer, you have taken a dyed version of love more than once because it was the shade you pictured.

You became the one who noticed while you were still small. Whose voice went careful, who left the room first, who was fine in a way that was not fine.

It was never your job and you did it anyway. You still walk into a room and take its temperature before you take your coat off.

Nobody has ever taken yours.

Hold it up to a lamp. It is not clear and it is not solid pink, it is faintly hazy the whole way through.

That haze is millions of pink fibres far too small to see. Every bit of the colour comes from something caught inside it.

The heart stone story arrived in the twentieth century and it arrived because of the colour. People have kept it by beds and on desks ever since, and that keeping is real even though the label was invented.

Aquarius, you can prove the story is invented and you have still kept the thing by your bed.

You started reading people early because somebody at home was hard to predict. Understanding them in advance was how you stayed safe.

It never switched off. You can narrate your own week to a friend, in order, with causes. You are completely outside it while you talk.

Water will not hurt it. Salt will not hurt it, and a year in a coat pocket will not either.

The sun will. The pink is genuinely light sensitive and a bright sill takes it out slowly, for good.
