Blue Lace Agate

banded chalcedony (agate)

Chalcedony banded in pale blue and white, essentially all of it from one region of Namibia, which is why the supply is finite and the price keeps climbing. The bands record the sequence in which silica-rich water filled a gas bubble in lava. People carry it for communication, calm and boundaries.

What it is

Chalcedony banded in pale blue and white, essentially all of it from one region of Namibia, which is why the supply is finite and the price keeps climbing. The bands record the sequence in which silica-rich water filled a gas bubble in lava. It is the calmest-looking stone in the case and priced accordingly.

What it is confused with

dyed-blue-agate, blue-chalcedony, angelite, larimar, howlite

Fine, tightly spaced concentric bands of powder blue alternating with white, curling and folding around former cavity walls in a lace or wave pattern. Bands are thin, parallel and follow the contour of the original void, they never cross each other. Translucent at the edges with a waxy luster, and the blue is always soft and chalky, never vivid. Some pieces carry a druzy quartz-lined vug in the middle. Vivid electric blue is dyed agate, not blue lace.

How to tell

Scratches glass, which rules out howlite and angelite. Check band edges under 10x, natural blue lace has soft blue and white bands of the same translucency, while dyed agate shows colour saturating the porous bands and leaving the dense bands white, producing an unnaturally high-contrast stripe.

Genuine blue lace agate is untreated. Dyed pale agate is common and reads as too blue and too even.

What it means for you

The Moon is at 1° Scorpio today. Blue Lace Agate is a chalcedony, 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, and it is the stone traditionally carried when the problem is proximity rather than intensity.

Blue Lace Agate for every sign

Aries

It is the slowest-looking object in the shop.

Effectively all of it comes from one region of Namibia, so the supply is finite and the price climbs every year. The bands record the order in which silica-rich water filled a gas bubble in lava, one layer at a time, never crossing. It is the slowest-looking object in the shop.

Taurus

The trade puts it at the throat.

Every band records one filling of a gas bubble in lava, laid down in order, never crossing another. Essentially all of it comes from Ysterputs in Namibia, so the supply is finite and the price only moves one way. The trade puts it at the throat, which is your part of the body.

Gemini

Mercury rules the sentence you should not have sent.

Nearly all of it comes out of one region of Namibia, which is why the price only moves one way. The pale bands record the order in which silica-rich water filled a gas bubble in lava, and they never cross. Mercury rules the sentence you should not have sent.

Cancer

Everything that arrived is still in the order it arrived.

The bands record the order in which silica-rich water filled a gas bubble in cooling lava, and they never cross each other. Nearly all of it comes from one region of Namibia. Everything that arrived is still lying in the order it arrived.

Leo

Every band is one filling of the bubble, in order.

Every band is one filling of a gas bubble in Namibian lava, laid down in order, oldest against the wall. Nearly the whole world supply comes from one region of the Karas, which is why the price keeps climbing. The calmest thing in the case and quietly the most finite.

Virgo

The bands never cross, because they record an order.

Effectively all of it comes from Ysterputs in the Karas region of Namibia, so the supply is finite and the price only climbs. The bands never cross one another, because each records the order in which silica-rich water filled a gas bubble in lava. Electric blue means dye.

Libra

The bands never cross each other.

Powder blue and white bands, thin and parallel, following the contour of the gas bubble they filled. They never cross each other. Effectively all of it comes from one region of Namibia and the supply is finite, which is the only aggressive fact about the stone.

Scorpio

A diagram of something filling a void.

The bands record the exact order in which silica-rich water filled a gas bubble in cooling lava. Almost all of it comes from one region of Namibia, so the supply is finite and the price keeps climbing. The calmest-looking stone in the case is a diagram of something filling a void.

Sagittarius

You will still say the true thing at the worst moment.

Fine powder-blue bands, all of them recording the order in which silica filled a gas bubble in Namibian lava. The trade files it under the throat and calls it de-escalation. You will still say the true thing at the worst moment, but slower.

Capricorn

Every band records one filling, laid down in order.

Every band records one filling of a gas bubble in Namibian lava, laid down in order, finest at the wall. Effectively the entire world supply comes from one region, which is why the price only travels upward. The calmest-looking stone in the case, priced like a commodity.

Aquarius

Every band is one filling event.

Every band is one filling event. Silica-rich water entered a gas bubble in cooling lava and left a layer, over and over, so the lace pattern is only the contour of the void. Almost all of it comes from one region of Namibia, so the supply has an end date.

Pisces

What exists is what there is.

The bands curl around the wall of a gas bubble in cooled lava, thin and parallel, never crossing. Translucent at the thin edges and waxy in the hand. Nearly all of it comes from one Namibian region, so what exists is what there is.
