What it is
A crystal wearing a coat of tiny crystals, like frost or a sea urchin. Spirit quartz grew a second generation of little points over every face, and it comes from just a handful of pipes in one part of South Africa. The tell is that the small crystals point outward in directions unrelated to the main crystal's axis, a mismatch no other quartz habit makes. Usually pale lavender with amber-tipped points. In old stories it is tied to group harmony, family and community, read off its many-on-one form.
What it is confused with
druzy-quartz, amethyst-cluster, candle-quartz, chalcedony-stalactite
A central quartz prism entirely encrusted with hundreds of tiny second-generation crystals standing out perpendicular to the host faces, like a bottlebrush or a cactus. The small crystals point outward in orientations unrelated to the main crystal's axes, that mismatch is the diagnostic feature and no other quartz habit reproduces it. Usually pale lavender with slightly darker or amber-tipped terminations, sometimes iron-stained orange at the base. Almost always a single-source look.
How to tell
Look at whether the small crystals stand off a single large central prism at odd angles (spirit quartz) or simply carpet a flat matrix plate (ordinary druzy). Scratches glass.
Occasionally iron-stained or lightly heated to intensify the amber tips; look for unnaturally uniform orange.
What it means for you
The moon is in Scorpio today. Carry spirit quartz. It is a quartz. In old stories it is the stone for when the problem is closeness, not heat.
You know what this one would do for you. You just don't have it.
Spirit Quartz for every sign
Aries
Speed is how this one gets ruined.
Never scrub it and never tumble it in a bag with anything else. The hundreds of small crystals standing off the central prism shear away under almost no pressure, and they grow near one set of pipes in Mpumalanga and effectively nowhere else. Speed is how this one gets ruined.
Taurus
It kept the original underneath the whole time.
A single prism that grew a second, finer coat of crystals over every face it already had, from a handful of pipes near Boekenhoutshoek in Mpumalanga. The tiny crystals shear off if you tumble or scrub it. It kept the original underneath the whole time.
Gemini
A crystal that could not stop adding to itself.
Every piece comes from a few pipes near Boekenhoutshoek in South Africa. A second generation of small crystals grew over every face at angles that ignore the host axes, and they shear off if you scrub. A crystal that could not stop adding to itself.
Cancer
The second generation ignored the parent axes entirely.
A second generation of small crystals grew over every face of the host prism, pointing outward at angles that ignore the parent axes entirely. All of it comes from a few pipes near Boekenhoutshoek in South Africa. The little ones shear off if you scrub, so keep it out of a pocket.
Leo
It photographs better than it holds up.
It photographs better than it holds up. A prism grown over with hundreds of second-generation crystals pointing every direction, from a few pipes near Boekenhoutshoek in Mpumalanga, and the tiny points shear off under a fingernail. Never put it in a bag with other stones.
Virgo
The small crystals shear off at the slightest abrasion.
Never tumble it and never scrub it. Hundreds of second-generation crystals coat the central prism, standing outward at angles unrelated to the host axes, and that mismatch is the only feature that identifies the thing. They shear off at the slightest abrasion. It comes from a few pipes in Mpumalanga.
Libra
Group harmony is one way to describe a crowd.
One prism wearing hundreds of smaller crystals, each standing in a direction the host never chose. It comes from a few pipes near Boekenhoutshoek in Mpumalanga and nowhere else on earth. Lore calls it a stone of group harmony, which is one way to describe a crowd.
Scorpio
It photographs far better than it survives.
A single prism encrusted in hundreds of second-generation crystals standing off at angles unrelated to the host, from a few pipes in Mpumalanga. It photographs far better than it survives. The small crystals shear off under a brush and do not grow back.
Sagittarius
Scrub it once and the coat shears off.
A single prism coated in hundreds of second-generation crystals standing off at angles that ignore the host. It comes from a handful of pipes near Boekenhoutshoek in Mpumalanga and nowhere else on earth. Scrub it once and the coat shears off.
Capricorn
Scrub it once and the coat is gone for good.
A single prism that grew a second coat of hundreds of tiny crystals over every face, all standing at angles unrelated to the host. It comes from a handful of pipes near Boekenhoutshoek in South Africa and nowhere else. Scrub it once and the coat is gone for good.
Aquarius
Aquarius belongs to the group and agrees with none of it.
A single prism wearing hundreds of smaller crystals, each pointing somewhere unrelated to the main axis. That mismatch is the diagnostic feature and the whole appeal. Aquarius belongs to the group and agrees with none of it.
Pisces
They shear off if you scrub it and nothing grows back.
Hundreds of tiny second-generation crystals standing off every face of a single prism, pointing in directions unrelated to the host. They shear off if you scrub it and nothing grows back. One small area of Mpumalanga makes all of it.

Care
- Water is fine. Dry it afterwards.
- Keep it out of direct sun. The colour goes and does not come back.
- The tiny surface crystals shear off easily — never scrub, never tumble in a bag with other stones. The amethyst colour fades in sun. Dust with a soft brush.
