Spirit Quartz

The big crystal finished. It had done its growing, reached its size, and stopped.

Then it sat in mineral-rich water and started again, growing hundreds of tiny crystals over its whole body.

Aries, you think finishing is the end of the interesting part.

Starting is where you feel most alive. Week one is loud and certain, the middle has no applause in it, so you go and find another week one.

Somewhere back there, one person only paid attention while you were beginning something. You got very good at beginnings and never learned what comes after.

This one did its second growing after it was already done. Nobody was watching that part.

Second things count.

Pick one up and rub a thumb across it. The small crystals shear off. They do not grow back, and they are on the floor now.

Never tumble it in a bag with other stones. Whoever wrote the polish-everything rule was not thinking of this.

Taurus, you handle things carefully because somebody once handled you carelessly.

You remember it clearly. Probably not dramatic. Just a person who was rough with something you had said was precious, and did not think it mattered.

Since then you go slowly. You check who you are handing things to. People call that guarded when it is really a woman who learned what careless costs.

Dust it with a soft brush. Nothing more than that.

Careful is not the same as closed.

The amber tips are sometimes helped along. A little iron staining, a little heat, and the orange comes up brighter than the hill made it.

The tell is uniformity. Natural tips vary. A whole cluster tipped the same exact orange has had assistance.

Gemini, you collect people the way this stone collects crystals, and none of them have seen the middle.

It began as a kindness. There was a room where the flat truth landed badly, so you learned to shade it, and everybody was happier, and you were the one who made that happen.

Now you check the temperature of a sentence before it leaves. The plain version lives somewhere behind your teeth.

Nobody in your life has heard it in a long time. You have not decided whether that is safety or hiding.

Say one uncoloured sentence tonight.

It grew twice. Once as a single crystal, alone, and then again as hundreds of small ones covering every surface of the first.

The big one is still in there. You can see it under the coat, holding all of them up.

Cancer, everybody is attached to you and nobody has asked who is holding you.

It started early. Around ten you worked out that if you managed everyone's moods the house stayed calm, and it worked, so you kept doing it for twenty years.

It got heavier about four years ago and you did not put a single thing down. You widened your grip and stopped mentioning it.

Nobody knows, because you have never made it visible. That is not the same as it not being there.

Tell one person how heavy it actually is.

It is quartz. Ordinary silica, the same stuff as a window or a beach, arranged twice instead of once.

The whole effect is arrangement. Nothing exotic went in. It did the same thing again in a different shape.

Leo, you are ordinary material arranged so that people stare, and both halves of that are true.

You know who is upset, who is being left out, who is going home to something bad. You learned it in a house where you had to know the weather before you walked in.

So you are the one who makes the group work. Everybody has a version of you in their phone and almost nobody has your Tuesday.

Nothing exotic went into you either. You did the same thing over and over until it looked effortless.

Somebody should notice that. Have you let them?

It survives water and handling and years on a shelf. What it does not survive is a sunny window. The lilac fades and does not come back.

The other thing that ends it is a scrub. Those tiny crystals shear off under a brush that is too hard.

Virgo, you are hardest on the parts of yourself that are already thinnest.

There was a stretch when getting things right was the only lever you had. You got very good at it, and it kept everything upright.

Now the standard has outlived the emergency. You still apply it at full strength to a life that is not on fire. You are tired in a way that sleep is not fixing.

Nothing about you needs a harder brush. It needs a softer one and a spot out of the light.

Move it off the sill tonight. Then sit down.

Turn it under a lamp. Hundreds of little points, none of them facing the same way, all attached to the same body.

No two catch the light at once. Whichever one you are looking at, the rest are in shadow.

Libra, you have been trying to face all of them at the same time.

You know what you want. You also know that saying it means one of them is disappointed. You have been avoiding that face since you were about nine.

So everybody gets a slightly different you and nobody gets the whole one. It is not dishonesty. It is a very old job you were handed before you could refuse it.

One of them can be disappointed. It will not end anything.

Try it on the smallest one first.

The first crystal grew, finished, and then sat in mineral-rich water for a long time doing nothing visible. Then the second growth started.

None of that middle period looked like progress. It is the entire reason the coat exists.

Scorpio, somebody once told you that you take too long to let people in.

They said it like a fault. What they meant was that you did not hand yourself over on their schedule, and the annoyance in their voice became evidence about you.

So you carry the idea that you are difficult. What you actually are is somebody who was let down early and adjusted accordingly.

The waiting was never wasted. Something was forming the whole time.

Slow is not a flaw in this one either.

Some of these get a little heat to push the tips more amber. Nothing sinister, just a nudge, and the shop rarely mentions it.

Look at the tips together. If every one is the same orange, somebody helped.

Sagittarius, you finished growing and then covered yourself in other people, and the shape underneath is gone.

Somebody spent your childhood listing what you would break or lose or fail at, and you built a life out of being the opposite. It worked. Now a warning and a challenge sound identical to you.

So this cluster has been in a bag, on a sunny sill, under a hard brush. All of that cost it something and none of it proved anything.

Some care is only care. Nobody is calling you fragile.

Keep it out of the window.

It handles water. It handles being held. What it cannot handle is a sunny sill, where the lilac bleaches out over months and never returns.

Nothing happens on any given day. You could not point at the day it changed.

Capricorn, you do not count anything that happened slowly.

If a week produced no result you file it as nothing. The years you spent being reliable go in that file. So does the long stretch when you held a family together with nothing on paper to show for it.

You worked out young that your place was something you paid for. Nobody said that out loud. You watched, and drew the conclusion, and have been paying since.

Move it out of the sun today. Some damage is only visible in hindsight.

It is one crystal wearing hundreds. Not a community, not a family, just quartz that grew twice and ended up looking like a crowd.

The lore about group harmony came from the shape. People read the picture and wrote the meaning afterwards.

Aquarius, you look like you have hundreds of people and you could name two who would answer at three in the morning.

You can explain a friend's family to her in four sentences. You will be right. Turn the same attention on your own and the picture goes soft.

It is not stupidity, it is position. Nobody sees the outside of the house they live in.

Somebody could describe it to you. That would mean letting one person all the way in.

Which one?

It grew once, stopped, and then grew again over its own body. Hundreds of small crystals, every one pointing somewhere different.

It comes from one hill in South Africa. The lilac goes pale in a bright window and does not come back.

Pisces, you grew a whole second coat over yourself and it still snaps off when somebody rubs at it.

You walk in and you know who is angry and who is pretending. You are usually right. Somebody at about fourteen called you dramatic for saying so.

So now you take it all in, say nothing, and go home flattened, and the people who caused it have no idea any of it landed on you.

It is not too much. It has never once been too much.
