Sugilite

A cheap purple stone this colour is almost always dyed howlite. Soft enough that a steel knife cuts it like chalk, and under the dye it is white.

Real sugilite came out of one mine in South Africa and there is not much left. That is the whole reason it costs what it costs.

Aries, you buy fast and then decide it is fine.

Deciding fast is how you protect yourself. If you go back and check you might find out you were wrong, and being wrong feels like being slow, and slow was the one thing you were never allowed to be.

Somewhere back there speed was how you got approval. Nobody praised you for checking anything twice.

Run a knife along the back of yours. It takes a second and then you know.

Being wrong is cheaper than not knowing.

Sugilite handles a rinse and handles being carried. What weakens it is a long spell of hard sun, where the purple quietly loses its depth.

Nothing happens on any one day. You could not name the week it started.

Taurus, the things that took something from you were mostly slow.

Not the dramatic year. The nine years where somebody was never once cruel and never once warm. You kept explaining to yourself that nothing was wrong because nothing had happened.

It counted anyway. You get to call a long grey stretch damage even though nobody in it ever raised their voice.

Move it off the windowsill tonight.

Slow things count. That is the whole point.

It is a manganese mineral. That is the whole of it. The purple comes from manganese in the rock it grew in and nothing more interesting than that.

The 1980s gave it two invented trade names to make it sound grander, luvulite and royal azel. The mineral itself did not change.

Gemini, you have been given a few names too, and you have worn all of them.

The funny one, the clever one, the one who is always fine. Each was accurate in one particular room, and you have been carrying all three since.

The problem is not the names. Nobody has ever asked which one you would pick. You are not certain you would know.

Pick one word for yourself tonight. Do not say it to anybody.

It only has to be true.

Turn it over and look at the back, where nobody bothered to polish. Real sugilite is the same purple all the way through. Dyed howlite shows white where the dye stopped.

The shop side always looks perfect. The truth is on the underside.

Cancer, everybody has only ever seen your shop side.

You take the call at eleven at night and you are steady on it. You have been the one people bring things to since you were far too young for it to be your job.

Nobody taught you how to be the one who needs something. You handle yours in the car before you go in. Then you walk through the door already fine.

Somebody would look at the underside if you turned it over. You have never once tested that.

Test it this week.

It grew slowly in manganese-rich rock, far down, with no light on it at all. Nearly every purple piece anyone owns came out of one mine in South Africa.

It did all of that unseen. The looking came at the very end and changed nothing about the stone.

Leo, you have never been certain you exist without somebody watching.

That is not vanity. It came from a house where attention was the thing that ran out first, so you learned to earn it, you got extremely good at it, and now going unwatched feels like going missing.

There are whole parts of your week nobody sees. They are still happening and they are still yours.

The purple was purple in the dark for a very long time.

It did not need the room.

Dyed magnesite, dyed jasper and dyed howlite all get sold as this. They are cheap and purple, and nobody in the chain has to say one false word.

The dye is the giveaway. It pools in the cracks and stops at the surface. Real sugilite is the same colour right through.

Virgo, you already know something is off and you are still collecting evidence.

Asking would give you an answer you would then have to do something with. Collecting feels productive, so you have been collecting for eleven months.

There was a house where raising a thing made it worse. You became a person who verifies quietly and never says the sentence out loud.

Look in the cracks. It is a ten second answer.

Then say the sentence.

It takes water and takes handling. What it does not take is a hot windowsill, because the purple weakens under long sun and does not come back.

It gives no signal while it happens. It just looks slightly less like itself each year.

It formed deep in manganese-rich rock, out of sight, over spans nobody was around to count. Then one mine in South Africa hit it, and that is nearly all there will ever be.

Scarce is not a marketing word here. It is a fact about a hole in the ground.

Scorpio, the real thing costs what it costs, and you keep apologising for the price of you.

Somebody used the word intense at you once and meant it unkindly. You filed it. Now you introduce yourself in a shallower version to save everyone the trouble.

The people who complained were not equipped for you. That is a fact about them, not a verdict on you, and you have had it the wrong way round for years.

There is not much of this in the world either.

Nobody prices a thing down for being rare.

Take a steel knife to an edge nobody will ever see. Sugilite will not cut. Dyed howlite peels away like chalk and shows white underneath.

Most people never do it. They would rather keep the story than have the answer.

Sagittarius, you would always rather have the answer, and it has cost you.

You ask the blunt question in the room where nobody else will. It has made you the one people call difficult, and you decided that was a price worth paying, and mostly you mean it.

Mostly. There are nights when you would like one person to have chosen you over being comfortable. Nobody has, and you have never said so.

Do the knife test. You already know you will.

It is expensive because there is not much of it. That is the whole mechanism. One mine, a limited amount, and a great many people who want purple.

Nothing about the price is a statement on the stone. The rock did not earn it.

Capricorn, you have never once let yourself be valued for anything but output.

If a week produced nothing you write the week off. Rest goes in that column, and so do the years you spent being the reliable one while your own life stayed exactly where it was.

You worked out very young that your place was conditional. Nobody said it out loud. You watched what got rewarded, drew the obvious conclusion, and have run on it since.

The stone is worth what it is worth for existing.

That is allowed.

Two facts, both dull, both true. Everything else attached to this stone was written in the 1980s by people selling it.

Aquarius, you check who wrote the rules before you follow them, and that has kept you out of a lot of warm places.

You could take apart a friend's situation in four sentences and be right about every one of them. Ask about yours and it goes soft and general.

You have been standing in this arrangement too long to see any angle on it. That is a position problem, not a thinking problem.

Somebody would tell you if you made it safe. Have you made it safe?

Hold it a minute and look at the black running through the purple. That is manganese, the same element that made the colour in the first place.

The dark part and the bright part came from one thing. Nobody separated them and nobody could.

People have kept this stone for grief and for shelter, especially those who feel it all at that volume. Not to turn it down. Just to have somewhere to put it.

Keep it out of hard sun. The colour weakens.
