Sardonyx is banded chalcedony, brownish-red sard layers set against opaque white or black. Rome gave it to Mars and to soldiers and kept it for courage in speech. Here is the catch. Most sardonyx on sale has been dyed or heat-enhanced to sharpen those stripes. Both are permanent, both are normal disclosed trade practice rather than a fake, and a treated piece is common and cheap.

You can still read the shape. Flat parallel layers mean sardonyx. Bands that curve mean ordinary agate.
